LasSaboritas: 10 dishes we missed during quarantine in Prague

Like many of you, LasSaboritas can’t wait to get back to pre-quarantine life. Being out on the town and dining at our regular spots is a comfort we won’t take for granted again. Until it is safe to do so, we spend our time daydreaming about all the great food that Prague has to offer.  Not necessarily a top ten Prague food list, this is more a list of satisfying foods we have missed during the lockdown period.

Calamares fritos at Gilda Pintxos & Tapas

Crispy, golden, tender squid served with a knockout aioli.  This dish is made for sharing, but you won’t want to. Until we can visit Gilda again in person, we follow them on Facebook and Instagram for mouthwatering photos. Gilda Pintxos & Tapas

Hot dog with crispy bacon from Mr. HotDog

A hot dog topped with crispy bacon, or bacon cheese sliders, or bacon cheese fries from Mr. Hot DoG.  We will just plan to order the whole menu because it’s all great.  They are currently open for phone orders and pick up, daily from 11:30 am to 9 pm.

Bread and herb butter from Bistrot Valentino

There is something extra comforting about a place where trivial things like soft bread and whipped butter are done with care. Our homemade sourdough starter experiments did not go according to plan. We miss professional bread. Especially the kind that comes with a bottle of rosé prosecco on ice.  Contact Bistrot Valentino for takeaway options. 

Pinsa at Kavárna Liberál

There is comfort in consistency. This Roman-style oblong pinsa from Kavárna Liberál in Holešovice is one of Prague’s reliably good pizza options. We like basil mozzarella or ham and rocket. Check out their Facebook page for the daily menu. 

Empanada de queso from Arepas de Lyna

This hand-held meal is comforting and always served with a smile. One bite of crisp corn masa and melted cheese is the food equivalent of being wrapped in a fuzzy blanket by your abuelita. Get empanadas by Arepas de Lyna delivered to your door from Wolt.

Bryndzové halušky from U Mariánského Obrazu

This Žižkov pub’s extra creamy version of Slovak dumplings smothered in sheep cheese and topped with crunchy lardons is our favorite traditional comfort food in Prague. Red velvet cake from Styl&Interier

This cake is so mouth-wateringly delicious, it will linger in your memory long after you’ve eaten the last crumb. Four layers of tender cake and rich cream cheese frosting, topped with a raspberry sauce…it makes a believer of anyone who thinks they don’t like red velvet cake. Styl&Interier are currently offering a limited menu for pick-up and delivery.
