The Mayors and Independents movement, STAN, won Prague’s municipal election, while Prime Minister Andrej Babiš’s ANO finished first in six regional capitals as counting concluded Sunday morning.

The results brought gains for STAN and its allies in major cities, a mixed outcome for ANO and setbacks for its governing partner SPD. Nationwide, independent candidates and local associations again won the most council seats.

Municipal turnout reached approximately 48 percent, up from 45.3 percent in 2022. Winning the vote does not automatically mean controlling a town hall: coalition negotiations will determine who governs many municipalities.

STAN wins Prague as ANO loses ground in several cities

In Prague, STAN narrowly beat SPOLU pro Prahu, taking more than 23 percent of the vote against just over 22 percent. Praha sobě followed with nearly 18 percent, ANO received more than 14 percent, and the Pirates also entered the council with more than 9 percent.

STAN’s mayoral candidate Petr Hlaváček has ruled out cooperation with ANO. The result puts him in a strong position for negotiations, although Prague’s next governing coalition has yet to be settled. Cooperation with the Pirates and either Praha sobě or SPOLU is likely to make Hlaváček the city's next mayor.

In Brno, a joint Christian Democrat–STAN ticket won more than 27 percent, ahead of the ODS–TOP 09 alliance and ANO.

ANO remained a major municipal force, finishing first in Ostrava, Olomouc, Pardubice, Karlovy Vary, Zlín and, together with independents, Plzeň. Its six regional-capital victories compare with eight in 2022.

Its clearest setback came in Ústí nad Labem, where the broad Jedno Ústí coalition won more than half the vote and ANO received around 16 percent. ANO also lost its previous first-place positions in Jihlava and Hradec Králové.

Other notable winners included Martin Kuba’s Naše Česko in České Budějovice and the Mayors for the Liberec Region in Liberec. The Christian Democrats retained the most council seats among parliamentary parties nationwide.

SPD lost representation in several regional capitals, including Brno, Ostrava and Liberec.

Five senators elected, with 22 seats still undecided

Five candidates secured Senate seats outright by winning more than half the valid votes:

  • Jan Grolich, KDU-ČSL, in Vyškov.
  • Jan Grulich, TOP 09, in Rychnov nad Kněžnou.
  • Jan Sobotka, STAN, in Trutnov.
  • Zbyněk Linhart, STAN, in Děčín.
  • Tomáš Fiala, Naše Česko, in Strakonice.

The remaining 22 seats will be decided in runoffs on Oct. 16–17. STAN had a strong first round: all 14 of its candidates either won outright or advanced. ANO sent 13 candidates to the second round, while nine ODS candidates advanced.

All three Prague constituencies voting this year face runoffs: Jiří Padevět against Jan Čižinský in Prague 1, Václav Láska against Radko Sáblík in Prague 5, and David Smoljak against Dagmar Pecková in Prague 9.

One of the closest contests was in Žďár nad Sázavou, where Josef Klement took the second runoff place by a single vote over Radek Černý.

Residents can check their municipality and Senate constituency on the official results website. The municipal vote is now complete; the final Senate outcome will depend on next weekend’s voting.
