What did Czechs search for the most during summer 2020?

Popular Google searches in the Czech Republic for summer 2020 included high interest in tomorrow’s weather, smart phones and, oddly, Catherine the Great, according to data from Google. As far as travel, people looked for domestic locations and Croatia.

Interest in tomorrow’s weather and the Prima TV series Slunečná topped searches, while coronavirus came in third. Most people staying at home or their summer cottages in the summer instead of traveling abroad made the weather important for planning day trips.

Slunečná premiered on January 11, and is Prima’s most-expensive series to date. Over the summer, there were promotions with actors on a bus traveling around the country. The series plot involves disputes over a family farm that some people want to sell, while others want to keep it and make goat cheese.

The coronavirus pandemic figures into three of the top 15 searches. Aside from third-placed “coronavirus” there was the Ministry of Health in sixth place and face coverings in eighth place.

New summer films often take up a lot of the top searches, but this year there was a drought of new releases. The Polish-Italian erotic film 365 Days (365 dní) was the top new movie that people searched online, coming in fourth place. The general topic of movies in 2020 came in 12th place.

The film is based on a novel by Blanka Lipińska about a woman in Warsaw who is held captive for a year by a dominant man in hopes she will fall in love with him. It has been available on streaming services and has received negative reviews, comparing it unfavorable to Fifty Shades of Grey.

New technology took up some people’s attention. The newest phone from Apple, iPhone 11, came in fifth place, while the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 came in 13th place and the unreleased iPhone 12 came in 14th. The upcoming game machine PlayStation 5, by Sony, came in ninth place. It is expected to be released at the end of 2020 for the holiday season.

Education took the seventh spot, with people looking for CERMAT, the Center for Education Results run by the Czech Education Ministry. The center oversees graduation exams.

The pandemic has caused people to spend more time on the internet. The online game Rondo and online shopping platform Zalando Lounge took 10th and 11th places.

Russian Empress Catherine the Great finished out the top 15 searches. Her life story was told in a 12-part Russian-made epic mini-series that aired over the summer on TV Prima.

As far as travel was concerned, people searched for domestic tips, with locations in South Moravia getting the most attention. Croatia topped locations outside the Czech Republic, followed by Greece, and specifically the islands of Santorini and Crete. Tunisia and Bulgaria also scored high.

Among personalities, one of the top searches was for American actress and singer Naya Rivera, who drowned in a lake in California. She was known for the series Glee. People also searched for George Floyd, whose death while he was being arrested sparked protests in the United States.

Interest in Czech celebrities was topped by actress Eva Burešová, who stars in Slunečná, and actress Tereza Ramba, who appeared in the film 3Bobule and the play Meda. People also searched for the late actor Svatopluk Matyáš, who appeared in The 30 Cases of Major Zeman (30 případů majora Zemana). He died July 10, 2020, at the age of 90.
