As temperatures plunge, the Christmas season is arriving in full force. This Thursday, Nov. 20, the first Advent market of the year opens at Náměstí Míru, inviting Prague residents to warm up and enjoy some early festive spirit.

Several other markets will open in the days after, including the standout, globally award-winning markets on Old Town and Wenceslas Square, and throughout the capital, including Jiřího z Poděbrad and Anděl.

Visitors can gleefully await Czechia's classic svařák (mulled wine), hot cider, roasted chestnuts, fresh fish, sausages, cheeses, and traditional Czech holiday foods like fried carp with potato salad. International imports, like churros, will also feature. Live music, theatrical performances, creative and handicraft workshops (for children and adults alike), and singers will all feature at Prague's largest Christmas markets.

✨ LIGHTS ON

This year, the lighting of Prague's biggest Christmas tree on Old Town Square will take place on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 4:30 p.m. This year's main festive symbol will be a 26-meter-tall spruce from the Ústí nad Labem region, specially selected in a competition.

Náměstí Míru offers a more varied food selection, including crepes and French cheeses, while the  Jiřího z Poděbrad market serves up everything from Christmas punch to farm-fresh fare.

Alternative markets worth visiting

If you’re looking for alternatives to Prague’s big Christmas markets, the city has a great mix of smaller, creative options. Design lovers can head to Christmas Lemarket at Mánes (Dec. 13–14), a curated showcase of local fashion, jewelry, ceramics, and kids’ brands, or explore the Winter Design Market at Výstaviště on the same days, complete with street food and a fully barrier-free setup.

Fans of retro style can browse vintage gifts at the cosy Smetánka pop-up on Prague 4's Jaurisova Street (Nov. 26), or enjoy the nostalgic Eterle Vintage Market in Prague 6 (Nov. 28-29), filled with period furniture, porcelain, and home décor.

Throughout the season, the Advent Markets in Holešovice Market (Nov. 27–Dec. 22) offer a festive mix of makers and food stalls, open Tuesday to Friday from 2–9 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
