Two new drive-in cinemas are launching in Prague over the next week

While cinemas throughout the Czech Republic are currently closed, two new drive-in venues will open in Prague over the next week

While cinemas throughout the Czech Republic are currently closed do to the measures intended to slow the spread of coronavirus in the country, two new drive-in cinemas will open in Prague over the next week, according to The Prague Reporter.

“Drive-in cinema hasn’t really existed in Prague for at least the past two decades (outside of a brief 2008 experiment at Prague’s then-Ruzyně Airport), but will be returning to the Czech capital next week during the Art Parking project that will turn the railway station Nákladové nádraží Žižkov into a full-service drive-in cinema,” writes The Prague Reporter.

“Additionally, the drive-in Kinoauto Praha will open in a parking lot near Prague’s Václav Havel Airport from tomorrow, April 24.

“The new drive-in cinemas might be your only chance to catch a movie on the big screen in Prague until later in June. All cinemas throughout the Czech Republic are currently closed due to restrictions surrounding the spread of coronavirus.”

The ArtParking project, which we wrote about earlier this week, will kick off theater and music performances at its Prague Market location starting on Monday, April 27.

Newly announced, however, is that the project will establish a new drive-in cinema concept at Nákladové nádraží Žižkov, formerly a popular summer cinema cultural space and the future seat of the Czech National Film Archive.

The Nákladové nádraží Žižkov drive-in cinema also opens on April 27, with a showing of the Oscar-winning movie Parasite. Future features include Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and the new Czech documentary V síti.

The cinema also offers refreshments, which can be ordered through  smartphone and delivered to your car during the movie. Tickets run 400 crowns per vehicle, which seems pricey but could be a bargain depending on the number of people in the car.

Kinoauto Praha, meanwhile, kicks off tomorrow at a parking lot near Prague’s airport tomorrow night, April 24, with a screening of Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. Czech classics Ikarie XB-1 and Loners will screen on Saturday night, and the sci-fi feature The Fifth Element on Sunday.

The venue also offers refreshments including burgers and nachos. Tickets run 600 crowns per vehicle.
