Today's top story

Czech ski resorts attract record weekend crowds

Ski resorts across the Czech Republic saw thousands of visitors over the weekend as fresh snow and sunny weather drew skiers, snowboarders, and cross-country enthusiasts. From the Beskydy and Jeseníky to the Krkonoše, Jizerské, Šumava, and Plzeň regions, slopes and trails were fully open, with some areas reporting over a meter of snow. Mountain services recorded multiple rescues, but operations ran smoothly.

Ice warning

Freezing rain may create hazardous ice

The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute warned that freezing rain could form ice across western and central Czechia from Monday evening, spreading eastward Tuesday. Ice accumulation may reach 2–5 millimeters, creating risks for pedestrians and drivers. Temperatures will drop below −12 °C in many areas overnight. Meteorologists advise caution outdoors, slower driving, and extra travel time, noting ice can also coat trees, power lines, and structures.

Gigafactory canceled

Babiš scraps plans for Moravian gigafactory

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš announced a planned battery gigafactory in Dolní Lutyně will not be built, citing local opposition. The previous government had approved the project, which could have created 7,000 jobs. Officials say the 278-hectare site may host a different investment agreeable to residents. Critics warn the decision could weaken the automotive sector and reduce potential state revenues.

Political dispute heats up

Motorists plan action over ministerial dispute

The Motorists party said it will take further steps in its dispute with President Petr Pavel over the appointment of Filip Turek as environment minister. Party leader and foreign minister Petr Macinka did not specify actions but rejected a constitutional complaint, saying the legislature, not judges, should decide government formation. Turek plans to sue Pavel for personal rights over his refusal to appoint him.

Election forecast

ANO leads January parliamentary poll

A January poll by STEM shows Czech political party ANO leading with 34.6 percent support, roughly matching its 2025 election result. ODS trails with 14.1 percent, followed by STAN at 12.6 percent. The Pirates and SPD would also cross the 5 percent threshold for parliamentary seats, while the Motorists, TOP 09, and KDU-ČSL would fall short. The survey, conducted January 2–7 with 1,000 respondents, did not account for pre- or post-election alliances.
