A legendary Prague canteen is back. And so are the cheap lunches

We visited the legendary U Rozvařilů canteen, reopened in Bílá Labuť shopping center and found affordability, hungry crowds, and farm-fresh lunches.

I thought I'd beat the lunch rush. After living away from Prague for 20 years, I should have known better.

By 11 a.m., the line at U Rozvařilů was already out the door. Czechs tend to go to lunch early but the crowd was still surprising. My husband, daughter, and I joined the fast-moving queue anyway. By 11:15, we were seated with trays in front of us, surrounded by a wide swath of Praguers: students, retirees, professionals, young moms. Everyone, it seemed, had heard about the comeback of one of Prague's most famed canteens.

Calling U Rozvařilů fast food wouldn't be a stretch. You won't get served faster at McDonald's and may actually pay more. After a couple of trips through the line, I can confirm that a proper Czech lunch, soup and drink included, easily comes in at around CZK 140. Depending on the menu, maybe even under CZK 130.

The meals may arrive quickly, but that's where the comparison to fast food ends. U Rozvařilů's supply chain – locally sourced meat, fish, vegetables, potatoes, garlic, caraway, onions – is slow food from farm to fork.
