Where to eat and drink in Prague now: July's tastiest openings and events

Dumplings on Jiřák, a kebab café on Veletržní, Syrian cooking on Hybernská, and pho from veterans who do it right.

THE ONE EVERYONE'S BEEN TALKING ABOUT

Home of Dumplings is the opening that has been generating the most noise, and for good reason. The concept arrives from Berlin, brought to Prague by May Tran of Bistro Večerka and his cousin Trang of the Han Food restaurants. They've set up on the corner of Jiřího z Poděbrad Square with a menu that takes dumplings very seriously indeed: beef, chicken, lamb, shrimp, vegetable, plant-based, kimchi, corn and cheese, or ground beef with melted cheese and jalapeños.

KEBAB PIVOT

ÜND Cafe is the latest move from Filip Urban and Antonín Winkler, the duo behind Gemüse Corner – the Berlin-style kebab shop that has become one of Prague's most dependable quick-eat destinations. They've opened a café and bakery right next door to their Veletržní flagship, and it follows the same logic: do a small number of things properly. Sweet rolls, croissants, laminated pastries, sourdough loaves and well-sourced coffee. The Gemüse Corner Danish – a house special bridging both worlds – is the thing to try first.

ASIAN ROUTES

Pho Halo is the project of two chefs who arrived in the Czech Republic 15 years ago and worked in various Vietnamese kitchens before launching the project together in Žižkov. The name says pho, and pho is certainly the centrepiece, but the menu moves comfortably between Vietnamese, Thai, and Japanese cuisines.

Over in Malešice, Saté has settled in after opening several months ago with a focused menu of Asian tapas alongside Czech beer and sushi. The concept is local Asia rather than pan-Asian fusion: small plates with genuine regional references, in a neighbourhood that doesn't have many options. A reason to cross the city if the dishes deliver.

THE MIDDLE EAST IN NOVÉ MĚSTO

Damascus House has opened on Hybernská with a simple brief: authentic Syrian and Arabic halal cuisine in an equally authentic space. The room seats over 200 and centres on an ornate fountain, with an interior that draws from traditional Damascus architecture. The menu covers the full range – mezze (hummus, baba ghanoush, muhammara, vine leaves), cold starters, grilled meats (shish taouk, lamb chops, grilled lamb pieces), and Syrian classics like kibbeh labanie and shakria, the slow-cooked lamb in yogurt sauce with rice.

Tasty Tayfun is a one-person baklava operation in New Town run by Master Chef Tayfun, who makes what he describes as the finest Turkish baklava produced in the Czech Republic. The credentials are serious: flour and pistachios imported directly from Turkey, with the pistachios sourced specifically from the Gaziantep region – a UNESCO-protected growing area considered to produce the world's finest.

FURTHER AFIELD

Grill & Greens has opened in Letňany, which is not a neighbourhood that usually makes it into food round-ups, but a premium steakhouse focused on Czech beef with a side of tapas and fresh salads is good to know for anyone in the north of the city. The menu is straightforward, the produce is quality, and it fills a gap.

Out in Sázava, about an hour from Prague, the historic František ironworks has been gradually rebuilding its identity as a cultural destination – and it now has a Bistro František to match. The menu is more considered than the location might suggest: 63°C eggs, croissant Benedict with pulled beef, calf's liver pâté, grilled meats and shrimp, and a dessert that sits somewhere between French toast and tiramisu. The space is minimal and photogenic. Worth the detour if you're spending a summer day on the Sázava River.

SOMETHING GREEN

Paradiso Matcha Bar has arrived in Prague with the kind of pastel-and-ceremony approach to matcha that the neighbourhood clearly has an appetite for. Prague's matcha scene is now genuinely crowded – Atomic Matcha in Karlín, UC Matcha, Jun Matcha Bar near Wenceslas Square and others have all staked out territory – but there's still room for a well-executed newcomer, and Paradiso is bringing its own aesthetic to the category in New Town.

FOR THE WINE LOVERS

Wine's Bay has been importing and distributing wines from New Zealand and Australia since 2020, and now has a proper home on Vinohradská in Prague 2 named Wineshop 36. The small, cozy space stocks an exclusively curated range from family wineries across the New World – Australia and New Zealand front and centre – alongside a selection of European and Czech bottles. You can also simply sit down with a glass and a plate of French cheese, cured ham or small snacks.
