The daily operation of the Prague metro will be extended by about an hour starting this week Monday, May 10, the Prague Public Transport Company (DPP) announced yesterday. The last trains will depart from the termini at 23.00, and the operation of the daytime bus and tram routes has also been extended. The updated last departure times have been published on the Transit Authority (DPP) website.

Metro services had been curtailed due to pandemic restrictions and passenger numbers had fallen dramatically. The recent lifting of anti-epidemic restrictions has led to a rise in passenger demand for metro services, and DPP has announced that the frequency of metro services will be increased, with shorter intervals between services at peak times.

The daytime operation of trams and buses will also be extended. Daytime routes will cease operation sometime between 23:00 and 23:45, and then the nighttime bus and tram service begins at 23:30. Trams will operate on 30 minute intervals and buses operate every 60 minutes during the nighttime service.

Ridership has fallen dramatically due to the pandemic, and weekday passenger numbers currently stand at 60 percent of pre-pandemic levels. The metro service has experienced the sharpest decline – prior to the pandemic, roughly 1.2 million journeys were made by metro each day. In March 2020, this figure had fallen by 80 percent.

It is expected that the DPP will operate on “Covid” timetables until the beginning of the summer holidays, when it is expected to switch on to its annual holiday timetables. The holiday timetables allow for a reduced service outside of peak hours and on weekends, especially in bus transport.

Current restrictions require all passengers to cover their mouths and noses with a respirator in all means of public transport, at stops, platforms and shelters and in all areas of the Prague metro.
