Former Czech Minister charged over Bitcoin case

Former Minister of Justice Pavel Blažek, along with his deputy and a lawyer, were charged with abuse of power in connection with last year's Bitcoin donation scandal, state prosecutors announced today. The case dates back to March 2025, when the Justice Ministry accepted a CZK 1 billion-donation from Tomáš Jiřikovský, who had previously been sentenced for running an illegal marketplace selling drugs.

Pavel meets with Finnish President Alexander Stubb

Meeting in Prague on Monday, Czech President Petr Pavel and Finnish counterpart Alexander Stubb highlighted that Russia presented the biggest threat to European security regardless of how the war in Ukraine ends. "Instead of talking about what Ukraine needs from Europe, maybe we should start thinking about what we in Europe need from Ukraine," Stubb said, praising Ukraine's know-how in modern warfare.

Tougher punishment for animal cruelty

A new government proposal seeks to impose harsher sentences for people found guilty of animal cruelty, Trade and Industry Minister Karel Havlíček said at a press conference. Jail sentences should increase to one year compared to six months today for acts of neglect that lead to death or serious health problems, and the killing of pets could now be considered a criminal offense.

Tennis star Siniaková becomes world n°1 in doubles

Czech tennis player Kateřina Siniaková once again became the world number one in the doubles ranking after her recent victory at the Madrid Open alongside US player Taylor Townsend. The 29-year-old player won ten Grand Slam doubles titles, making her one of the most decorated Czech female players in history. There are also two Czech female players - Karolína Muchová and Linda Nosková - in the singles ranking's top 15.

Czech ice hockey players shine in US

A strong week-end for Czech ice hockey players. With 28 saves and a success rate of over 96 percent, goalie Jakub Dobeš was one of the main architects of Montreal's win against Tampa Bay in the decisive game 7 of the NHL Playoffs on Sunday. Meanwhile, forward Martin Nečas also played a big part in the Colorado Avalanche's 9-6 victory against the Minnesota Wild.
