Prague derby chaos caused by "mutual hatred"

The chaos that unfolded on Saturday on the pitch of the Eden Arena continues to be the talk of the town. In an interview with iRozhlas.cz, Vendula Divišová, a political scientist who focuses on violence in sports, said that "long-standing hatred" between the two camps is behind the strange outburst - usually caused by fans "who lost the match", not the other way around like on Saturday.

Czech government names NATO plenipotentiary

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has approved the nomination of Jakub Landovský, a former ambassador to NATO, as the government's plenipotentiary for the fulfillment of commitments to the North Atlantic Alliance. Speaking to the media ahead of the announcement, Landovský said he would strive to make sure Czechia meets NATO requirements to spend at least two percent of GDP on defense.

Weather: Czechia faces sudden cold front

A cold front is heading for the Czech Republic on Monday, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute warned, with heavy rainfall expected throughout most of the country. Thunderstorms are also expected to bring torrential rains, and temperatures will significantly cool down on Tuesday, with some snowfalls even due in some mountainous areas.

Survey warns of children's excessive screen time

More than 40 percent of Czech children aged between six months and five years old spend more than an hour a day on a phone or tablet, according to a STEM agency survey, and 18 percent over two hours on an average weekday. Even about a third of children younger than 11 months spend at least an hour daily in front of a screen, with the presence of an older sibling a reinforcing factor, the poll showed.

Elderly man found after three days in the woods

An 83-year-old Czech man was found safe, but with moderate injuries, on Monday morning after spending three days stuck in the woods, Novinky.cz reports. The elderly man had set off on Saturday through the forest to play football in nearby Soběšice, but fell and remained stuck until a passerby walking his dog found him and called emergency services to the scene.

POLL RESULTS: We asked readers about Prague's plans to redesign the controversial Soviet-era "Moscow-Prague" sculpture at the Anděl metro station through an international art competition. About 40 percent of you say the sculpture should be completely removed, and 36 percent argue that Prague should leave it unchanged. An additional 18 percent agree the city should simply add more historical context.
