The high-stakes Prague Derby football match between Slavia and Sparta was abruptly abandoned on Saturday night after hundreds of home supporters stormed the pitch, leading to confrontations with visiting players and a full evacuation of the Sparta team from the stadium.

The match, played at Slavia’s Fortuna Arena, was stopped with about four minutes left to play and Slavia leading 3–2. If the result had stood, Slavia would have secured the league title early. Instead, the game was officially terminated following security concerns and fan violence on the field.

Police have since opened a criminal investigation into suspected public disorder and are reviewing video footage to identify those involved.

Pitch invasion ends high-stakes derby

The incident occurred in the seventh minute of added time when sections of Slavia supporters entered the pitch from behind advertising boards. What began as a surge toward the playing surface quickly escalated as more fans followed.

According to police and match officials, several hundred supporters entered the field, while others threw pyrotechnics toward the away section where Sparta fans were located.

In the ensuing chaos, multiple Sparta players were reportedly confronted and physically attacked. Television footage showed at least one player being struck with beer, while others were pushed during the disorder. Sparta later confirmed that the team left the stadium out of safety concerns before the match was officially declared over.

Police investigate suspected assaults

Police spokesperson Richard Hrdina said officers are investigating the incident as suspected public disorder, which could carry prison sentences of up to two years if proven.

Authorities said initial findings confirm at least one Sparta player was physically assaulted, with further potential victims still being identified through video analysis.

“Criminal proceedings have been opened on suspicion of disorderly conduct,” Hrdina said, adding that investigators are also examining extensive use of pyrotechnics during the match.

Police deployed riot units to regain control of the stadium, while spectators were gradually cleared from affected sections. Officers are now reviewing stadium security footage and social media recordings to identify individuals involved in the pitch invasion and attacks.

Official reactions

Slavia chairman Jaroslav Tvrdík addressed fans inside the stadium shortly after the match was halted, describing the situation as the worst incident he has experienced at the club.

“I am very sorry for what happened. This should not have occurred,” he said, also acknowledging that the club may face disciplinary sanctions, including a potential 0–3 forfeit and stadium closure.

Sparta later issued a brief statement confirming the team’s departure from the stadium due to safety concerns.

The Czech Football League (LFA) condemned the incident, calling it unacceptable and damaging to Czech football’s reputation. The disciplinary commission is expected to review the case on Sunday, though officials say a final decision may take longer given the complexity of the situation.

Slavia could face a range of penalties, including a match forfeiture, fines running into millions of crowns, and restrictions on hosting future matches.

Sparta goalkeeper Jakub Surovčík said he will pursue legal action after being targeted during the pitch invasion. In a social media statement, he described being threatened and physically confronted by a fan who entered the field.

Police confirmed they are also reviewing claims that multiple players were assaulted, including Surovčík and teammate Matyáš Vojta. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities expected to analyze stadium footage in the coming days to determine the full scope of the incident and identify those responsible.
