Talks underway to discuss cultural sector funding
So-called "small cultural tripartite" negotiations are bringing together representatives of the state, cultural institutions and trade unions this afternoon to discuss funding of the Czech cultural sector amidst budget cuts and growing concerns about Culture Minister Oto Klempíř's plans. Meanwhile, Seznam Zpravy reports that Klempíř's (mis-)management style is increasingly antagonizing other members of the government.
More visitors to Czech ski resorts this winter
Ending in most places over this past Easter weekend, the 2025/2026 winter season attracted about 5 percent more visitors to ski resorts across Czechia than the previous year, the Association for Mountain Resorts (AHS) said. Despite the capricious and changing weather, about 4 million people are believed to visit annually Czech ski and mountain resorts during winter.
Inflation in Czechia accelerates in March
Czechia's inflation rate picked up speed again last month, with consumer prices rising by 1.9 percent year-on-year, according to the latest figures released by the Czech statistical office (CZSO). Analysts point out that the increase is mainly due to the rise in fuel prices caused by the war in Iran, and that the increase in energy costs has not yet been fully reflected in last month's inflation figures.
Czech music industry continues to grow
Revenues in the Czech music industry grew by over 8 percent in 2025 to reach nearly CZK 2.4 billion, including two-thirds coming from streaming platforms. Income from physical and more traditional music segments like CDs and vinyls also saw a more moderate growth of about 7 percent. The top-selling album last year was Imposter Syndrom by 32-year-old Czech rapper from Kladno Viktor Sheen.
Czech Ornithological Society celebrates 100 years
Founded on Easter Monday in 1926, the Czech Ornithological Society is celebrating its 100-year anniversary, growing during that time from a small group of bird enthusiasts to a vibrant community of 8,000 members. In an interview with Seznam Zpravy, its director Zdeněk Vermouzek explains how new bird species keep appearing in the Czech Republic, from the white-tailed eagle in the 1980s to - possibly in a not too distant future - parrots as a result of climate change.
POLL RESULTS: After a recent accident, we asked reader whether they thought cyclists should be banned from the tunnel connecting Karlín and Žižkov. A majority of you, 70 percent, argued in favor of separate pedestrian and cycling lanes to make it safer, and about one fourth (24 percent) said the tunnel should be restricted to foot traffic.
