PM Babiš to meet with NATO chief Mark Rutte

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš will meet with NATO's Secretary General Mark Rutte tomorrow in Prague, the PM told reporters today. "We will talk about NATO, about our commitments, about our army," Babiš said. The meeting comes against the backdrop of US officials criticizing Czechia's low defense spending plans, and amidst controversy about who will represent the Czech Republic at the next NATO summit in July.

Netanyahu thanks Czech Republic for Israel support

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has thanked Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Foreign Minister Petr Macinka for their "great support" for Israel, his office said in a statement. Described as an "exemplary representative of the friendship" between the two countries, Macinka met with Netanyahu in Israel for an official visit to boost bilateral political and business relations.

Czech cities commemorate Holocaust and victims

Over 40 cities across the Czech Republic participated in the Holocaust Remembrance Day yesterday, known as Yom HaShoah in its Hebrew acronym, reading the names of some of the victims aloud. A special memorial event was also held in Terezín in the former Magdeburg Barracks. "If I assume that a hundred [names] are read every year, it comes out to 350 years, so it should end in 2340," a spokesman for the Terezín Memorial explained.

Original, uncut Kill Bill movie screens in Prague

Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair is arriving in Prague cinemas this week as a single, 4-hour-long epic, Seznam Zpravy writes, combining into one viewing experience what viewers have come to know as Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2. Director Quentin Tarantino had originally wanted to release it as a single whole, but the now-iconic revenge film was eventually split into two parts after pressure from producer Harvey Weinstein.

Tourists receive huge reward to treasure discovery

Honesty pays off. The Hradec Králové region, east of Prague, gave a reward of CZK 11.7 million to two tourists who discovered a gold treasure buried in the Czech countryside near Dvůr Králové, Denik.cz reports. The good samaritans dutifully handed over the incredible find to the Museum of East Bohemia, and have now been rewarded for their honesty. The exact amount was calculated by multiplying the weight of the collection with the price of gold on the day of the discovery.

POLL RESULTS: We asked readers if they agreed with experts' estimates putting a dignified monthly gross wage in Czechia at about CZK 48,000 and CZK 57,000 in Prague. A vast majority of you, nearly three-quarters, say it should be higher, while 17 percent argue the estimate is realistic. An addditional 8 percent believe it should be lower as most jobs cannot realistically reach this level.
