50 last-minute tips for spending a dazzling New Year's Eve 2020 in Prague

From gala events to laid-back fun, these are some of the best places to ring in the year 2020 in the Czech capital

Prague may make a lot of “best-of” lists as a destination for ringing in the new year, but the truth is many locals leave town and head to the mountains to celebrate. Those who remain enjoy dinner, clubs, and concerts and — for the brave of heart — New Year’s Eve in crowded Old Town Square, which kicks off annually at 5pm on December 31 with live music and DJs and culminates in fanfare around midnight.

While the city of Prague does not have an official New Year’s Eve fireworks show many businesses along the riverbanks set off their own private display at midnight, making riverside and on-board dining popular options.

About those fireworks: this year Prague City Hall has cancelled its traditional fireworks display on January 1, 2020 and will stage a videomapping at Wenceslas Square instead. An alternate fireworks display, sanctioned by Prague 2 but not the city and organized by the group “Fireworks for Prague,” is scheduled to take place on January 1.

Fancy feasts

A number of Prague’s top restaurants offer prix-fixe menus for NYE, while many hotels plan festive events. Priced from 1,000 CZK per person up to 7,000 CZK and beyond for a full black-tie gala event, reservations are most definitely required:
