This weekend in Prague: Make a splash with cocktails by the pool

Day of Europe|Celebrate the European continent’s official birthday on May 5 at Střelecký ostrov. The celebration includes concerts on the Day of Europe stage and Vltava stage, information sites of countries and international organizations that come with food and drink tastings, a debate tent, and games for children.

Open doors|The Senate opens its doors to visitors on May 8, who can access the Waldstein and the Kolowrat Palace on this occasion, and admire the peacocks and magnolias in the Waldstein gardens. Senate President Miloš Vystrčil will personally welcome the first visitors in the morning.

Music festival|The 20th edition of United Islands of Prague takes place May 5 and 6 in Kampa, Střelecký ostrov, Janáčkovo nábřeží, and several music clubs. Admission to concerts is free. The audience will be able to enjoy approximately 70 artists from Czechia, Slovakia, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Hungary, Ireland, France, and Luxembourg. Read more in our article.

LOR marathon|Fans of movie adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien books can enjoy all three Lord of the Rings movie on May 6, in an Extended Trilogy marathon at Kino Aero, featuring The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.

Psychological mayhem|The horror-comedy Beau is Afraid is at Kino Lucerna on May 6 and 7, as well as later in the month. The passion project of director Ari Aster, which stars Joaquin Phoenix as a middle-aged man who decides to take life into his own hands, aims to “break down barriers of genre and audience expectations.”

Good neighbors|Watch Slovak director Zuzana Piussi’s debut feature, Go Crazy (Zešílet) on May 7 at Kino Atlas, as well as later in the month. The film, which was inspired by a true story, mixes comedy and nightmarish elements in its portrayal of neighborly relations.

Peek behind the curtain|The comedy Death Suits Him is at Švandovo divadlo na Smíchově on May 6 (with English subtitles). Written by playwright, theater manager and actor, Daniel Hrbek, the play paints a picture of the theatrical world from an insider's perspective, where the struggle for success is at odds with the desire for human closeness and friendships.

Contemporary dance|A timely celebration of spring, 420PEOLPE- May is at The New Stage on May 7. A ballet performance inspired by Czech K. H. Mácha's legendary poem “May,” the show combines contemporary dance, live music, and singing (with English surtitles). 

food and drinks

Wine festival|A perfect occasion for wine lovers, Festival vína SPRING 2023 takes place between May 5 and 8 at Písecká brána. Treat your palate to flavors of domestic and foreign wines, and a variety of food. Enjoy the accompanying program of live music, and dance lessons, plus an occasion to beautify your hair with the help of a French hairdresser.

Cinco de Mayo|Grab your sombrero and head to the Hard Rock Café Prague this May to taste a special Mexican menu featuring Chicken Fajitas marinated in tequila and lime, Chips with Queso, or Jumbo Margaritas, which come in the flavors Baja California Blackberry, Mexico City Mango, and Cancun Orange Cadillac.

Pool party|Have fun by the pool on May 6 at Manifesto Anděl. Its Sunset Pool Party is an opportunity to try the newest addition to the Soot bar cocktail menu. The aptly named Fling is a one-of-a-kind concoction that combines coffee-infused aperitif, fresh orange juice, and tonic. Additionally, you can book an exclusive degustation of 3 or 6 new Soot cocktails in tasting size.

For dog people|Share your love for man’s best friend with other dog lovers at Happy Dog Show on May 6 at the Džbán campsite. Every dog ​​registered for competitions that are part of the show will receive a gift package worth 250 CZK. Ticket proceeds go towards dogs in need at the Home4Pets shelter.

Crafts and herbs|The Botanicus Craft Center and Herb Gardens in Lysá nad Labem are welcoming visitors again until the end of October. Its Saturday schedule includes juggling, theater, and musical performances. In addition to workshops for the production of soap, rope, candles, and paper, which are also available on weekdays, weekend visitors can also take part in workshops of carvers and blacksmiths. The banquet hall offers refreshments made out of ingredients grown in the center’s ecological gardens.
