A record 760 recruits took their military oath at the Vyškov-Dědice barracks on Friday, following an expansion of the Czech military academy’s basic training capacity.

It was the largest oath ceremony at the academy since Czechia’s army became fully professional in 2005, spokesman Martin Kresta told local media.

The graduates included 548 professional soldiers, 142 members of the Active Reserve and 70 participants in voluntary military training. The academy expects another full intake when its next course begins Nov. 2.

Bigger courses bring a new record

The latest basic training course began with 821 recruits, also a record. Of those, 760 successfully completed it.

Kresta said departures were primarily linked to family or personal circumstances, injuries and illness.

The previous record ceremony, held last year, involved approximately 600 soldiers. More typically, between 400 and 500 graduates take the oath at each ceremony, which usually takes place six times a year.

Friday’s ceremony was the first following an increase in course capacity from 600 to 900 recruits—a 50 percent expansion.

Accommodating larger groups required changes to logistics, housing and command arrangements, Kresta said. The academy had resolved the problems identified during the course and would apply those lessons to the next intake, he added.

The figures show increased training throughput at Vyškov, although the graduates will follow different paths. Most are entering professional service, while others belong to the Active Reserve or have completed voluntary training.

Information about those service options is available through the military’s official recruitment portal.

Top recruit achieves a perfect score

The ceremony also recognized private František Holcman as the course’s best recruit.

According to Kresta, Holcman became the first recruit to achieve the maximum score of 250 points across the academy’s assessment system.

Recruits accumulate points throughout training, including written tests covering tactics, weapons training, medical preparation and topography.

Physical fitness, participation in comprehensive field training and a final test also contribute to the result. The award therefore reflects performance across the course rather than a single examination.

The next intake is scheduled to begin Nov. 2, with its oath ceremony planned for Dec. 11. Kresta said capacity was expected to be filled again.

The academy’s record follows its decision to make room for larger courses. Whether future ceremonies surpass Friday’s total will depend on both the number starting training and how many complete it.
