A 12-year-old boy died Thursday morning after being struck by a tram at the Hradčanská stop in Prague 6, prompting renewed calls for vigilance from the city’s transport safety campaign Neskákej mi pod kola (“Don’t jump under my wheels”).

“It is with deep sadness that we announce a tragic event. Today, a 12-year-old boy died under the wheels of a Prague tram,” the campaign stated on social media.

“We appeal again: pay attention, look around—multiple times if needed—and stay present. Remember, pedestrians do not have the right of way over trams. A mobile phone, headphones, or a hood can cost you your life,” the post added, expressing condolences to the boy’s family.

The accident occurred around 9:15 a.m. as the boy, reportedly a foreign national, was leaving the stop. Bystanders initiated CPR via phone with guidance from emergency services.

Paramedics and a supervising doctor arrived shortly afterward and continued resuscitation efforts for more than 45 minutes, but were unable to revive him.

“The accident is under investigation by criminal police. We found no trace of alcohol in the tram driver’s system,” said police spokesman Jan Daněk.

Tram service toward Letná and Malostranská was suspended during the emergency response.

The Hradčanská stop has long been criticized for its safety risks. Many commenters on the transport company's post noted frequent close calls with trams moving quietly through the busy intersection. Others questioned why the trams no longer ring out in warning before pulling out of the station.

In 2011, Czech track star Lubomír Tesáček was also fatally struck by a tram at the same location.

The pre-Easter tragedy marks the first tram death of 2025.
