You're running late for a meeting and rush onto the metro platform. Now it's a guessing game: which side will get you to your appointment faster? There's an app for that—eventually.
The city of Prague has announced further details about the launch of PID Lítačka 2.0. After nearly eight years of operation, the popular transit app is entering the next stage of its development.
One of its most anticipated features? It will tell you exactly which metro car to board for optimal connections.
The upgrade is necessary not only to help commuters reach their destinations more efficiently, but also to future-proof a system that currently serves around 200,000 unique users per day and has approximately 2 million users overall.
Year-over-year user growth has been running at 20-30 percent, making it a key part of daily travel for hundreds of thousands of people.
Working out the bugs
And yet a look at Google reviews shows that those users have been vocal about several issues. Many complain of frequent crashes and instability, particularly during the critical moments of payment and ticket activation.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Jaromír Beránek, Prague’s first deputy mayor for transport, addressed those concerns.
"We are constantly moving forward, but we also face fundamental challenges." He added that, "A modern urban mobility application must be attractive, keep up with the times, and meet the demanding requirements of its users."
Payment gateway outages have frustrated passengers, with some reporting failed transactions or duplicate charges. Others have struggled with login and authentication problems, finding themselves locked out of their accounts.
One user on r/Prague wrote: "I'm satisfied with the transportation system here in Prague and I'm gladly paying for the service, so fingers crossed that the new version will be available soon. It's a pity that the most fundamental features for an app aren't working properly on some devices."
TRANSPORT APP OVERVIEW: For nationwide route planning, users typically turn to IDOS, Google Maps, or Pubtran to quickly compare train and bus connections. For daily commuting in Prague and Central Bohemia, PID Lítačka is the most widely used option, as it combines trip planning with ticket purchases and fare management in one official platform, allowing users to buy and activate tickets or long-term passes, access real-time data, pay for parking, and plan door-to-door journeys that mix public transport with walking or shared bikes and cars.
Route planning features have drawn criticism for ticketing bugs—tariffs that can't be found, wrong stations displayed, and confusing zone rules that leave passengers uncertain about fare requirements and ultimately vulnerable to fines.
Another user noted: "In January I wrote to customer assistance and they replied that they're aware of this issue, that they're deploying a solution, and that for the moment, the physical card was the best option. It's almost mid-May [2025] and nothing has changed." Yet another user said they went back to IDOS for searches.
What’s new in version 2.0?
Despite the occasional bugs, the city says the app has maintained high user ratings and is increasingly the first choice for finding connections and paying for parking. However, the current version is reaching its limits.
The updated app promises a more modern, intuitive interface along with several long-requested features. These include dark mode, options to buy and activate multiple tickets at once, and simpler parking management (including the ability to end a parking session early) and recommendations for the best metro car for quicker transfers.
The new version, Beránek said, is expected to "stand up not only today, but also in the future—and can flexibly respond to new, as yet unclear requirements."
The app is also set to strengthen its multilingual capabilities. Currently, PID Lítačka offers Czech, English, and Ukrainian interfaces, but some features, such as transport outage alerts, remain available only in Czech.
A spokesperson said the development team is working to expand the app’s language support to better serve its increasingly diverse user base.
Originally created primarily as a ticket-purchasing and basic route-search tool, PID Lítačka has grown significantly.
Connection searches remain the app's most-used function—in 2025 alone, over 109 million connections were searched through PID Lítačka. The new version will offer greater clarity and better integration of different modes of transport.
Beyond the headline upgrades, a spokesperson told us that the app currently offers tools some users may not realize are available, such as transport maps for cities across Central Bohemia, information on stroller-friendly station exits, and even the ability to plan combined train-and-hiking trips directly within the app.
PID Lítačka 2.0 is being prepared for a 2027 launch. The current version of PID Lítačka will remain fully functional until the new generation replaces it through a regular update. The transition will be seamless for users and will not require any intervention.
