Just a few days to go until the 60th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) – taking place between July 3-11 – packs up and rolls up the red carpet, until next time.

But even for those who couldn’t make the trip to the famed Western Bohemian spa town and didn’t hobnob with the likes of Dustin Hoffman, Harvey Keitel or Juliette Binoche, the party goes on – or may just be getting started.

From July 13-19, Echoes of KVIFF (Šary Vary) is bringing the top titles and most successful movies screened at this year’s edition to several cinemas in Prague and Brno.

The best of Vary, right around the corner

Šary Vary “tries to bring titles to Prague and Brno that are currently resonating or bring new creative and artistic approaches and themes,” explained Anna Lísalová, a member of the organizing and curating team.

“We include in the program both ‘big’ films that already have an established reputation and are expected to be a success with audiences, as well as smaller ones that will premiere at the Karlovy Vary festival and are worth paying attention to,” she said.

There’s a lot to choose from: more than 60 screenings of about 20 titles from KVIFF’s various competitions are planned in Prague cinemas throughout next week.

Some of the most anticipated films include Fatherland by Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski (Ida, Cold War) and starring Sandra Hüller and Hanns Zischler in the lead roles; All of a Sudden by Japanese filmmaker Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car); James Gray's Paper Tiger starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller; or Bára Basiková, a documentary by Helena Třeštíková on the renowned Czech singer and actress.

Top Šary Vary screenings

A few note-worthy screenings to mark in your calendar:

  • On the evening on Monday, July 13, the grand hall of Světozor will screen the – yet unknown – winning movie of KVIFF’s main competition. Tickets are usually sold out several days in advance.
  • The queer-infused Chica Checa by young Czech filmmaker Šimon Holý will screen at Kino Přítomnost on July 13 followed by a debate with the director.
  • The highly-anticipated Czech-Slovak-Hungarian coproduction Only Beautiful Things to Look At (Pramen in Czech) – starring Aňa Geislerová in the lead role – will have its distribution premiere on July 16, also at Kino Světozor and with a discussion after the screening.
  • Echoes of KVIFF will conclude on Friday, July 19, with a screening of the Cannes Palme d’Or winner Fjord by Romanian director Cristian Mungiu.

All screenings are English-friendly. In Prague, films will be shown in Kino Světozor (CZK 190 per ticket), Kino Aero (CZK 190) and Kino Přítomnost (CZK 230). You can find the full program and a short intro to every movie here.
