Free admission returns to major Czech cultural institutions in September, with the expanded program expected to continue into 2027.

Czech state museums and galleries will offer free admission on the first Sunday of every month from September, under an expanded cultural access program announced by the Ministry of Culture on Monday.

The first free Sunday will be Sept. 6, followed by Oct. 4, Nov. 1 and Dec. 6. The ministry said it expects the program to continue into 2027 and potentially become a permanent arrangement.

The initiative builds on free-admission pilots held earlier this year, but the new program brings museums and galleries together under the same monthly schedule and covers a broader range of institutions.

Among the participating institutions are five sites of the National Gallery Prague, four sites of the Moravian Gallery in Brno, two sites of the Museum of Art Olomouc, four sites of the National Museum and the Moravian Regional Museum.

Culture Minister Oto Klempíř said the program goes beyond the government's original plan to provide free admission for selected groups, including seniors, children and young people.

“We are going much further,” Klempíř said, describing the initiative as an effort to make culture accessible to the widest possible range of people.

The ministry previously tested free admission on different Sundays for galleries and museums. The trials produced significant increases in attendance at many participating institutions, in some cases several times higher than on regular Sundays.

The ministry is now evaluating attendance and the financial impact on individual institutions, including whether they require compensation for lost ticket revenue.

The government has also announced two additional free-admission days for state castles and chateaux: Aug. 30 and Sept. 27. More than 100 sites administered by the National Heritage Institute will participate.
