Rainbow parade, Potter debut, and Letná big top: Prague’s August culture fix

August in Prague trades some of July's outdoor concerts for two of the city's biggest annual gatherings, a circus town rising on Letná hill and a rainbow-colored week across Vinohrady, while galleries, gardens, and open-air screens prolong the summer festivities.

The French phrase translates literally as "joy of living," a show devoted to just that brings together current work from Tomáš Jetela, Tomáš Němec, and Václav Misař, three painters who share joy in the act of painting itself. The Chemistry Gallery. (Through Sept. 11)

Standing in what was once Kafka's childhood home, the Kafkoff bistro just launched one of its first exhibitions, running throughout the summer, as a playful interplay between the worlds of pop culture, urban art and Prague's own history and well-known figures. Kafkoff Gallery. (From July 30)

Set off on a beautifully interactive journey in the world of Hogwarts and wizardry with the world-travelling Harry Potter: The Exhibition, launching in Prague this month. Fans of the J.K. Rowling-inspired cinematic universe will be able to have a closer look at movie props, take part in brewing potions or spell-casting activities, and join the more than 4 million people worldwide who have already visited the exhibition. Once a year, dozens of castles, chateaux, and monasteries across the country stay open after dark, lit by torches and fireworks, with costumed programs bringing their histories to life. It's a national event, with the main celebration at Horšovský Týn, but Prague has its own participating sites: Chvalský Castle, Invalidovna, the Monastery of the Minorites of St. James, the Senate gardens, and the gardens beneath Prague Castle among them. Keeping the medieval theme going, the 9th annual Tournament of Kings (Turnaj králů in Czech) will be held on the last weekend of August at the Max von der Stoel Park in Prague 6. Medieval music, sword-fighting, falconry displays, juggling performances, knightly jousts and much more will fill a two-day fest of historical re-enactment perfect for families. Unlike many other cities in Europe that celebrate it sooner, August is the usual month for the Prague Pride Festival, and this year is no exception. With almost 200 events scheduled throughout the Pride Week and culminating in the traditional Pride Parade, this year you can expect new venues and more intimate, community-driven events. Czechia's best-known Queen tribute act brings its 2026 summer tour through Prague, one stop on a nine-city run. Now in its 19th year, Queenie has played more than 1,400 shows in 25 countries and performed its own shows at the O2 Arena seven times. Křižíkova fontána. (Aug. 11)

The Pride Parade might be skipping Letná this year, the Prague 7 park will still be hosting the 23rd edition of the famed Letní Letná contemporary circus and theater festival during the better part of August. Some 200 world-class shows spanning two weeks and a half when top international acts and the crème de la crème of Czech circus and theater companies will awe and enthrall visitors with mesmerizing acts of physical and artistic prowess. This original MA Theatre production, part of the venue's seventh annual Summer Grébovka season, traces the life stories of people who emigrated from Europe to Argentina between 1900 and 1946 amid economic crises, wars, and persecution, and how that wave of immigration helped found tango as it's known today. Staged in the Grotta, an architectural folly in Havlíčkovy sady. (Aug. 20-21)

A fifth annual cultural and remembrance event marks the 58th anniversary of the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, organized with the Institute of Independent Journalism, Czech Radio Radiožurnál, and Post Bellum. The day mixes a debate and video stage, exhibitions on 1968, and civil-society programming with an evening outdoor screening of Miloš Forman's "Taking Off," his first American film, made after he left Czechoslovakia. Now in its third year, the festival is timed to follow Ukraine's Independence Day and brings together traditional folk choirs and modern Ukrainian music, street food alongside more contemporary dishes, an art and fashion showcase from Ukrainian creators, hands-on workshops, and a dedicated children's creative zone. Now in its ninth year, this national day of open access brings dozens of synagogues, cemeteries, and Jewish heritage sites across Czechia free or by voluntary donation. Of Prague's Jewish Town monuments, only the Jerusalem Synagogue takes part, with two permanent exhibitions on heritage preservation in its women's gallery. Various locations. (Aug. 9)

A last chance to see inside one of Prague's most significant Baroque buildings before it closes for a multi-year reconstruction. The open house runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a formal closing ceremony at the building's north gate at 5 p.m. Invalidovna. (Aug. 22)

The Prague Bonsai Society exhibits members' trees at the Botanical Garden of Charles University, distinguishing the show from typical bonsai displays by focusing on "author's bonsai," trees grown from seed, cutting, or seedling by the growers themselves rather than imported or collected in the wild. Kusamono grass bonsai round out the exhibition. (Aug. 24-30).

The third edition of this joint summer series from the Gallery of the Capital City of Prague (GHMP) and Radio Wave returns to the gardens of Troja Chateau for three free evenings, pairing musical performances with the unveiling of new sculptural works and contemporary dance choreography from the SE.S.TA Choreographic Development Center. This year's theme, "Labyrinth: The Landscape of Inner Wandering," runs through music, sculpture, and choreography alike. (Aug. 28, 11, 25)

An exclusive selection of titles pulled from the thematic sections of the well-known Summer Film School festival gives Prague audiences a taste of the program without the trip to Uherské Hradiště. Sample lineup includes Papaya, Canal (1957), and La Notte (1961) from the Legends strand, and Do the Right Thing from Milestones. Aero Cinema. (Throughout August)

John Hughes' 1986 teen classic gets a Kulešof Presents throwback screening, with a post-film Q&A from A. Tesař and M. Pleštil. Molly Ringwald stars as Andie Walsh, an 18-year-old carving out her own sense of style and self-confidence while caring for her father in the wake of her mother's departure. In English with Czech subtitles. Edison Filmhub. (Aug. 11)

The Anishort International Festival presents only the best from the world of short animated film for the twelfth time, screening 16 award-winning shorts selected from more than 3,500 entries across over 100 countries. Part of the Summer Cinema Karlín Barracks program. Kasárna Karlín. (Aug. 19)

The Museum of Decorative Arts hosts a family garden picnic to close out the summer, with paper-making, vase decorating, and flower-arranging workshops, bring a blanket, or just relax by the fountain. Moves indoors if the weather turns. (Aug. 29)

Now in its 11th year, this festival brings Asian culture, performance, and food to Central Park Pankrác, with a program that has grown steadily since its founding. (Aug. 22)

British trip-hop veterans return to Prague to mark 30 years together, touring behind eleventh studio album "Escape The Chaos." The band has sold more than 10 million records and was recently tapped by Chaka Khan to headline her Meltdown festival in London. The Prague date is something of a family affair on stage, with singer Skye Edwards joined by her husband on bass and son on drums. SaSaZu (Aug. 9).

Ukrainian DJ sensation Miss Monique is paying Prague a visit at the end of August for a special sunset performance with supporting acts yet to be announced. Hang around after her act for an unofficial afterparty just nearby. Křižík Fountain. (August 23) 

The Swiss-Ecuadorian guitar duo of brothers Alejandro and Estevan Gutiérrez plays its first-ever Czech show this month, bringing a sound built on two interlocking guitars, Latin American influence, and a cinematic, atmospheric feel. Their latest album, "Sonido Cósmico," was produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. Lucerna Velky Sal. (Aug. 21)

Iconic Irish American Celtic punk band Dropkick Murphys are bringing their contagious energy and greatest hits to Prague’s Areal 7 in Holešovice as part of the Prague Open Air festival running throughout the summer. Galway-formed Irish streetpunk band An Slua will be the supporting act. Areal 7. (August 5)

Students from the University of Iowa, a few kilometers from Spillville, where Dvořák spent the summer of 1893 and wrote his "American" string quartet, travel to his actual birthplace to perform it. The Conifer Quartet and Seamark Quartet round out the program with Beethoven's Op. 18 No. 4 and pieces by contemporary composers Gabriel Kahane and Sam Young. Nelahozeves. (Aug. 8)

The unique multi-genre Povaleč music festival is back for its 20th anniversary, once more bringing a joyful three-day bonanza of music, theater, films, podcasts and workshops to the heart of the Karlovy Vary region. The carefully curated fest blends alternative subcultures spanning many genres in a famously laid-back, open and welcoming atmosphere. Bring your tent, bring your good vibes, and enjoy the party.
