1️⃣ Budget debate moves forward in parliament

Czechia’s outgoing government has sent its 2026 state budget proposal to the newly elected Chamber of Deputies, keeping a planned deficit of CZK 237 billion. Outgoing PM Petr Fiala said the move prevents a budget freeze as coalition talks between ANO, SPD, and Motorists drag on. The draft preserves funding for defense and new nuclear reactors at Dukovany. Lawmakers begin debate this week.

2️⃣ School unions to detail strike plans today

Czech school unions will announce details of a planned strike today, citing a shortfall of CZK 3.7 billion in the Education Ministry’s budget for November and December. The ministry insists the funds will arrive on time, with approval expected Nov. 19. Unions warn principals face 10 percent spending cuts without the money. A school strike last took place in the Czech Republic in November 2023.

3️⃣ Czech authorities will begin mass hen culling

A major bird flu outbreak has struck a poultry farm near Lanškroun, prompting the culling of 53,000 hens and roosters starting today. Firefighters in protective suits will euthanize the birds and disinfect the site. Veterinary authorities have set up 3 km and 10 km protection zones, banning poultry transport. Officials urge caution among small farmers as containment efforts continue across eastern Czechia; human contamination is unlikely, according to the State Veterinary Administration.

4️⃣ Prague Metro Line C to close this weekend

Prague’s Metro Line C will shut down between Hlavní nádraží and Pražského povstání from Saturday to Monday for sleeper replacement, the city transport company (DPP) announced on X. Replacement XC buses will run along the route. DPP says the work will swap out 178 old wooden sleepers for concrete ones. Frequent weekend closures continue as Florenc station undergoes reconstruction and systems are upgraded for future automatic trains. Read more about transport alternatives here.

5️⃣ Cold front to bring snow and freezing nights

Temperatures across Czechia will drop sharply from the weekend as a cold front moves in, ending this week’s mild weather. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute warns that from Monday night, night frosts and snow are possible even outside mountainous areas. Today and Friday are expected to remain unusually warm, with highs of up to 17°C in some regions. Expect freezing nights and possible snow from early next week.
