Finnish President continues Prague visit
Finland's President Alexander Stubb continued his two-day Prague visit after meeting with Czech counterpart Petr Pavel yesterday. On Tuesday, Stubb and Pavel gave the keynote speeches of the Europe as a Task conference at the Prague Castle, largely focused on European security. The Finnish President also met with Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and went on a 10-km run through Prague's city center with Pavel.
Czech army chief urges security wake-up call
The Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces Karel Řehka said that the Czech Republic cannot pretend anymore that global conflicts - from Ukraine to the Middle East - does not concern it. Speaking at a security conference in Pilsen, Řehka called on the current political leaders to rise to the current and future security challenges and increase the country's defense readiness and capabilities.
Shares of Czech arms company fall sharply
The shares of leading Czech defense company and arms manufacturer Czechoslovak Group (CSG) fell by almost a fifth to their lowest level since it went public on the Prague Stock Exchange. Just yesterday, a hit-report by Hunterbrook - both an investment company and investigative journalism outfit - threw into doubt the sustainability of CSG's business model, sending their stock plummeting on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange.
New Napoleonic Wars exhibit opens in Moravia
The new permanent exhibition Slavkov and Europe during the Napoleonic Wars will open tomorrow in Slavkov u Brna, in Moravia, close to the site where the famous Austerlitz battle took place over 220 years go. As part of a partnership with the Fondation Napoléon, the exhibit will present for the first time in the Czech Republic personal objects and items that belonged to the former French emperor.
Drunk train driver causes dismay and confusion
An intoxicated train driver has been found responsible for several mistakes and failures on the route between Přerov and Lipník nad Bečvou, east of Olomouc, yesterday. After starting his shift around 4 p.m., the visibly drunk driver started off the route abnormally slowly and repeatedly forgot to open doors at stations, leaving the 40-odd passengers dismayed and confused. No one was injured, and the man is now facing possible prosecution.
