Czechia records hottest day of the year
Parts of Czechia recorded the first summer day of the year on Saturday, with temperatures reaching at least 25 degrees Celsius in regions including Pilsen and the Elbe River basin, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute said. Meteorologists expect even warmer conditions on Sunday, with highs rising by another 2–3 degrees. The warm weather, combined with ongoing drought, has also increased wildfire risk, particularly across northern Bohemia and southern Moravia.
Babiš warns Motorists over coalition rhetoric
Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said coalition partner Motorists must change how they communicate now that they are in government. Speaking on TV Nova, Babiš criticized recent remarks by government commissioner Filip Turek, who apologized after calling civil servants “rats” and saying ministries should be cleared of them. Babiš said he warned coalition leaders that such language harms the government, despite otherwise describing the coalition as stable.
Czech hockey team loses to Sweden
Czechia’s national hockey team lost 4–2 to Sweden in the Czech Games tournament in České Budějovice. Forward Jaroslav Chmelař scored his first international goal and added an assist, but Czechia was outplayed in the third period. Despite his milestone, Chmelař said he would have preferred a win, citing defensive mistakes that led to goals against.
Czech bartender wins mocktail world title
Czech bartender Jan Lukas won the Mattoni Grand Drink world championship in Karlovy Vary on Friday, taking the title in the global nonalcoholic cocktail competition. Lukas, from České Budějovice, won with his drink “The Nest,” made with aloe vera and celery. It marks the fourth time a Czech competitor has won the event, which brought 20 bartenders from around the world to compete in Karlovy Vary.
Prague marks air-conditioned trams
Prague’s public transit company has introduced a snowflake symbol on digital stop boards to indicate air-conditioned trams. The feature helps passengers choose cooler vehicles during hot weather. The Prague Public Transit Company says 127 tram units have air conditioning, typically activated at around 22 degrees Celsius. Air-conditioned trams can also be identified by a yellow front panel.
