Czech parliament approves state budget
The Czech Chamber of Deputies approved the 2026 state budget on Wednesday with a planned deficit of 310 billion crowns ($13.3 billion), higher than last year’s 290.7 billion shortfall. The budget, the first under Prime Minister Andrej Babis’s coalition government, passed with 103 votes in favor and 88 against. Revenues are projected at about CZK 2.12 trillion and spending at CZK 2.43 trillion. President Petr Pavel is expected to sign the measure.
Czech men experience violence from mothers
About one in nine Czech men has experienced domestic or sexual violence, with more than half abused before age 15, according to an Ipsos survey presented Wednesday by the nonprofit Under the Lampstand. Mothers were most often identified as aggressors. The group launched a campaign, “Men (Don’t) Cry,” to raise awareness. Lawmakers from the STAN party say they will push legal changes to strengthen protections for child victims.
Apartments near metro stations see price jump
Apartments near Prague metro stations sold for more than CZK 118,000 per square meter on average in the second half of 2025, about CZK 10,000 more than earlier in the year, according to a Flat Zone analysis. The most expensive housing remained near stations on Line A, led by Staroměstská. The cheapest apartments were near Černý Most. Prices also rose around some planned stations on the future Line D.
Cold spell, possible snow forecast this weekend
The Czech Republic will see a significant cooldown at the end of the week, with Sunday’s daytime temperatures staying between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius in Bohemia and 11 to 15 in Moravia and Silesia, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute said. Snow is possible above 700 meters. Friday will be mostly clear, while Saturday brings increasing clouds and scattered showers, with mountain snow in western Bohemia. Nights will turn colder.
Czech Grand Designer of the Year awarded
Czech designer Jiří Krejčiřík was named Grand Designer of the Year 2025 at the Czech Grand Design Awards in Prague for his lighting collections and musical furniture. Designer and architect Eva Eisler was inducted into the Hall of Fame for her long influence on Czech design and education. The Academy of Design of the Czech Republic presented 11 awards during the ceremony at Prague’s Estates Theatre.
