Party shift?

ODS signals move further right

The Civic Democratic Party (ODS) is shifting sharply to the right under new leadership, writes Novinky.cz. At its 2026 congress, chairman Martin Kupka and deputies outlined plans for a “solid blue” program, including tougher social policies, a stronger nation-state focus, and market-oriented reforms. New proposals, such as the “Eight Modern Articles” and the Olomouc Articles, aim to guide party policy on pensions, healthcare, and unemployment benefits. Leaders say the move positions ODS for future elections.

Prisoner return

Czech citizen freed from Venezuela is in Prague

A Czech citizen detained in Venezuela for over a year has safely returned to Prague. Jan Darmovzal landed at the former Ruzyně airport on Jan. 18, accompanied by three to four other released prisoners. Officials, including Foreign Minister Petr Macinka and Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, oversaw the operation. Darmovzal is awaiting a medical check-up. His family thanked those involved in securing his release and called for support for others still imprisoned.

Severe frost

Cold snap returns to Czechia

Temperatures in the Czech Republic will drop again in the coming days, with night lows reaching minus twelve degrees Celsius, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) warns. Meteorologist say the cooling will be gradual, with daytime highs around zero or slightly below. While clouds will increase later in the week, significant snowfall is not expected. The cold weather should help preserve snow in the mountains until early February.

Consumer repair rights

Czechs gain new legal right to repair

From July 31, 2026, Czech consumers will have the right to request repairs for technically fixable products, including washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and mobile phones, under new EU rules. Sellers must complete repairs within a reasonable time and price, and provide access to spare parts. The Ministry of Industry and Trade confirmed the rules are included in draft legislation, which also extends warranties when repairs are carried out and sets out consumer protections for complaints and refunds.

Winter blues

Jan. 19 marks Blue Monday in Czechia

Today marks Blue Monday, a day labeled as the year’s most depressing, though experts say the challenges come from winter fatigue, short days, and post-holiday stress. Psychologists recommend small, manageable steps to boost mental well-being: getting daylight, exercising, maintaining sleep and diet routines, and staying socially connected. Doctor Kateřina Šédová of Loono emphasizes that depression is a serious condition and urges anyone struggling to seek professional support rather than dismiss their symptoms.
