1️⃣ Fiala cabinet holds final meeting today

The outgoing cabinet of Prime Minister Petr Fiala meets for its final regular session before ANO leader Andrej Babiš and his coalition partners take office next week. Ministers will address amendments to budget rules, juvenile detention, and post-warranty repairs, as well as proposals on psilocybin medicines and a new vaccination strategy for 2025–2029. Fiala’s four-year government ends as ANO, SPD, and Motorists prepare for a January confidence vote.

2️⃣ Sale of Smartwings marks end of Czech aviation era

Experts say the purchase of Smartwings by Turkey’s Pegasus Airlines represents a symbolic end to national aviation, citing market pressures and the difficulty for small carriers without major investment. While passengers may see little change, analysts note the loss of tradition and identity if rebranding erases Czech markings, comparing it to the decline of historic maritime shipping.

3️⃣ Czechia took in 725,800 Ukrainian refugees

UNICEF reports Czechia has accepted 725,800 Ukrainian refugees since Russia’s 2022 invasion, including 215,000 children. Currently 397,300 people hold temporary protection, as many return or relocate. Officials say integration must continue beyond UNICEF’s concluded partnership, with ongoing focus on language, education, employment, and trauma support as family reunifications rise post-war.

4️⃣ Government may require repairs after warranty

A draft law would require manufacturers to offer repairs even after warranties expire and in cases of accidental damage, aiming to extend product lifespan and curb waste. Covering common appliances and electronics, makers could charge reasonable costs. The bill transposes an EU directive, provides consumer access to repairers via an EU website, and may take effect on July 31.

5️⃣ Czech press photo finalists announced

A record 300 photographers submitted 5,250 images for the 31st Czech Press Photo, with nominations in nine categories, including new European and domestic themes. Trends ranged from protests to ecology and elections. Winners will receive awards on January 20 at the National Museum, where selected works will be exhibited. Kateřina Šulová won the Prague Mayor’s Grant for a series from Olšany cemeteries.
