🍿 NOW IN CINEMAS
Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons star in Bugonia, Yorgos Lanthimos’ remake of the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet!, which follows a kidnapped CEO whose captor believes she is an alien.
The Prague Reporter writes that “the film belongs to the interplay between Stone and Plemons, and both actors are utterly compelling in roles that would not traditionally attract our sympathies,” highlighting Lanthimos’ mix of absurdist humor and dark political satire in crafting a grimly entertaining black comedy.
Keanu Reeves is a well-meaning but inept guardian angel in Good Fortune, a lighthearted comedy about cosmic missteps and the directorial debut of Aziz Ansari, who also co-stars alongside Seth Rogen.
“Reeves’s angel is utterly compelling as Good Fortune’s true humble spirit,” notes The Prague Reporter, praising the actor’s warmth and the film’s gentle humor, adding that Ansari’s comedy charms with old-fashioned sentimentality and flashes of sophistication, making it an unexpectedly heartwarming experience.
Luc Besson reimagines Bram Stoker’s classic in Dracula: A Love Tale, a lavish period romance following the immortal Vlad (Caleb Landry Jones) as he pursues the reincarnation of his lost love, Elisabeta (Zoë Bleu) and is pursued by a priest played by Christoph Waltz.
The Prague Reporter writes that Besson’s latest “may not make a lick of sense, and will especially turn off fans of the novel, but it remains a striking exercise in visual ambition and operatic absurdity,” praising the director’s flair for the preposterous. Note that the movie is screening in both original English and Czech-dubbed versions locally.
📺 NEW TO STREAMING
I Love LA follows aspiring PR manager Maia (Rachel Sennott) as she navigates influencer culture, friendships, and career ambitions in Los Angeles. Jordan Firstman, True Whitaker, and Odessa A’zion co-star.
Indiewire writes that the series “piles on its own steady (and stealthy) jokes, leaning into influencer culture’s vacuous reach, and embracing its characters with surprising sincerity,” praising Sennott’s blend of satire and empathy. The series premieres tonight on HBO Max (Monday morning, Prague time) with new episodes dropping weekly.
🎥 Filmed in Prague
Zach Cregger's Resident Evil is now filming in Prague this Halloween season, but did you know that the very first feature-length horror movie ever made was also filmed in the Czech capital?
The Student of Prague was a haunting Faustian tale about a young man who sells his soul to the devil. Released in 1913, it was primarily filmed in studio in Germany but also shot on location in Prague, largely in and around Prague Castle. You can stream the full movie on YouTube and learn about more Hollywood horror films shot in Prague here.
