A number of events are planned in the Czech capital tomorrow to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Czech President Václav Havel.

A Candle for Václav Havel is a cultural event organized by activist group Politika a Svědomí who invites the public to gather at Jungmann Square from 11:00-18:00 where throughout the afternoon excerpts from Havel’s work will be read accompanied by musical performances. See the Facebook event page for more details.

The Heart to the Castle 2018 march will see a large heart lead a procession from Václav Havel Square (the Piazzetta of the National Theater) to Hradčanské náměstí beginning at 18:00.

“A heart that personally symbolizes all the good that Mr. Havel has awakened in us, we will take to the castle for the fourth time this year,” says one of the organizers of the event, Jiří Bareš.

The culmination of the parade will be a performance of the Czech national anthem on Hradčany Square. See the Facebook event page for more details.

A more light-hearted memorial is also scheduled for tomorrow. The “Short Trousers For Václav Havel” initiative sees participants roll up their pants in a nod to Havel’s first inauguration to the Presidency in December 1989, when he wore visibly short trousers.

Since 2012 when the event kicked off, tens of thousands of people around the world continue to sport rolled short cuffs on December 18 in an effort to keep the tradition — and the late dissident’s memory — alive.

The first president of the Czech Republic, playwright, essayist, philosopher, and one of the leading figures of the Czech history, Václav Havel died on the 18th December 2011 at the age of 75.
