Košík.cz begins delivery of packaging-free groceries in Prague

The online supermarket is one of the first grocery delivery services in Prague to offer packaging-free food

Online supermarket Košík.cz has launched an ambitious plan to offer a number of bulk food items without plastic packaging.

It will be working with the Czech company MIWA, a unique technology system designed to reduce packaging and food waste production.

The company says its delivery team will dispense orders (selected by customers by weight) into 100-percent-recyclable paper bags with recyclable labels containing nutritional data, storage, composition, and, the date of minimum shelf life.

Košík begins its pilot project with 60 products; if the launch is a success its unpacked product range offering could increase to hundreds of items.

A company spokesperson told Ekolist.cz, “Our goal is to eliminate disposable packaging as much as possible. However, their successful introduction into circulation has a number of pitfalls that we will have to overcome.”

For added ease of use, customers will be able to return the bags to Košík couriers for recycling. The current online offering includes lentils, rice, dried fruit, and pasta.

In the Czech Republic, shops that specialize in packaging-free sales or returnable containers are slowly growing. According to Reduca.cz, there are 517 such stores and e-shops in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Košík’s main competitor Rohlík.cz has said that it will not yet offer recyclable packaging due to hygiene concerns.

Aside from several packaging-free supermarkets and cosmetics shops opening in Prague in recent years, the city also has a packaging-free farmer’s market, Heřmaňák in Prague 7 .
