Fundraisers for families of victims of Ostrava shooting have raised 2.6 million crowns so far

Ostrava, North Moravia, Dec 16 (CTK) – People have so far sent more than 2.6 million crowns in support of the families of the seven victims whom a Czech middle-aged man shot dead in the Ostrava Teaching Hospital on December 12.

Over 2.4 million crowns was in an account of the Ostrava Teaching Hospital this morning and about 200,000 crowns were in an account of Technical University of Ostrava. Both institutions will give the money to the families after the end of the fund raising planned for March 31, 2020.

The university is close to the hospital and it had to introduce special security measures after the fatal shooting last week.

The Ostrava-Poruba primary school has started a fund raising for the family of a man whom the shooter killed. The man was a member of a group of parents of children attending this school.

When the attacker started shooting in the hospital waiting room, the man shielded his 12-year-old daughter by his own body. He died and his daughter survived.

The Prison Service and the police trade union today started a fund raising for the families of two prison employees who were among the victims. Both men went to see a doctor.

Fans of the Banik Ostrava football club collected money for the families of the victims at the home match against Sparta Praha on Saturday. They raised approximately 330,000 crowns. Moreover, the Banik club donated 150,000 crowns to the families and its players and employees are collecting further money.

A raging shooter killed six people and wounded three in the waiting room of its outpatient traumatology centre last Tuesday morning. The shooter left the hospital and committed suicide a few hours later.

On Thursday, the hospital announced that a woman, whom the attacker shot in the head, died of her injuries. The lives of the other two injured people are not in danger and both men are in home care.

The police are inquiring into the motive of the 42-year-old shooter and the way he acquired his illegal firearm. Czech Radio (CRo) and daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) reported last week that the shooter believed that he was seriously ill and no one wanted to help him.
