With winter around the corner, people living in Prague will be casting their eye to new destinations—in Europe as across the world—for a well-earned break to enjoy the holiday season after a busy 2024.

If you’re still deciding where to go, here’s some good news: Prague Airport has recently expanded its list of travel destinations, announcing that operating airlines will fly to tens of new destinations—from the Americas to Asia.

European escapes

For those seeking a milder European winter, several new direct flight options are available in 2024. Travelers can now jet off to the British cultural cities of Edinburgh, Liverpool, Belfast, Birmingham, and Glasgow (all easyJet).

Further south on the continent, Prague Airport now offers flights to the French city of Nice, Naples in Italy (easyJet), and the Greek capital of Athens (various). Further east, you can also catch a flight to Kayseri, a scenic city in the center of Turkey (Pegasus).

Alluring Asia?

If you want to travel somewhere hot and escape the bitterly cold Czech winters, Prague Airport now offers flights to various Asian countries, and has expanded its connections to others.

Direct flights from Prague now connect the Czech capital with the island of Phu Quoc (World 2 Fly) in Vietnam, the city of Krabi in Thailand (in fact, the airport has now launched more direct flights to Thai regions, multiple airlines operate), and Oman, in the Middle East (SalamAir/Air Arabia).

You can also fly to Bahrain (Manama; Smartwings) this winter, where visitors can see the Persian Gulf.

New routes to Africa

For an exotic retreat, Prague Airport now lets airlines fly to Kenya, Zanzibar, and Mauritius (various). The airport has also ramped up the frequency of its connections to Madagascar, which is the continent’s largest island.

Pacific and Caribbean peace

South America also beckons for people living in Czechia. You can now catch a flight to the Mexican resort of Puerto Vallarta (on the country’s west coast; World 2 Fly) or Holguín in Cuba (World 2 Fly).

Where do people like to fly most often?

This winter, according to chairman of Prague Airport’s board of directors Jiří Pos, this winter's trend is to travel to the mountains by plane. “Sofia and Tbilisi [Georgia] are popular destinations,” he said.

Pos also added: “This year we can see an increase in demand for holidays in exotic destinations.”

Čedok travel agency spokeswoman Klára Divíšková told Expats.cz: "Most of our clients fly with us to Zanzibar in the winter, followed closely by the Dominican Republic, Thailand, and Madagascar. Other frequent destinations are resorts in Egypt, the Canary Islands, or Kenya."

💰 eight tips to save money when flying from Czechia

  • Travel where the crown is strong: Choose destinations with favorable exchange rates against the Czech crown—this will probably be countries with a presently shaky economy.
  • Plan ahead, or be smart: Experts say that booking around three months in advance offers the best prices, though this varies by destination. However, you can also get good deals by snagging last-minute discounts on unsold seats.
  • Explore alternate airports: Nearby, larger airports—Berlin or Vienna—might have better deals due to greater supply and market competition. A new survey found a 10-percentage-point increase in Czechs traveling from Vienna instead of Prague.
  • Watch for sales: Keep an eye out for airline promotions and discounts, and be sure to redeem frequent-flyer miles to save on ticket costs.
  • Use flight comparison tools: Google Flights, Skyscanner, Hopper, or Momondo let you easily compare prices. Letuska.cz and Pelikan.cz are Czech examples.
  • Set price alerts: Use notification-sending apps to automatically monitor fare changes and get the lowest prices.
  • Stay flexible: Avoid peak travel times like public holidays/booking around Christmas and opt for less convenient flight hours (early morning or late night). Try to travel mid-week rather than between Friday and Sunday.
  • Bundle travel expenses: Combine flights with accommodation to save.
