As the Vltava comes alive this summer, each riverbank offers a different vibe. From calm to buzzy, the question is: which side are you on?

With summer in full swing in Prague, the cooling reprieve brought in by the Vltava River has become the city's beating heart once again. Its banks have awakened with renewed energy—cafés have opened their windows, cultural events have returned, and locals are reclaiming the promenades.

But each side of the river tells a different story. Here's how to experience both to the fullest this summer.

The right bank (Rašínovo nábřeží)

The east bank, stretching from Slovanský ostrov to Podolí, is where Prague's riverside life reaches its peak. This is Náplavka: lively, social, and always in motion. Come here for events, drinks, markets, and endless people-watching.

(A)void Café

If you've ever strolled down the east bank, you've probably noticed the river cubes—architectural curiosities built into the embankment wall which were originally used for river storage. Today, they house cafés, galleries, and studios, one of which is (A)void Café. This bar and gallery directly below the Dancing House displays rotating exhibits, currently showcasing 'Laco Garaj: Sheet metal and sculptures'.

LAb

Located inside one of Náplavka’s iconic circular riverfront spaces, LAb is more than just a stylish zero-waste bar and bistro. It’s a hub for sustainable dining and craft cocktails, with a focus on local, seasonal ingredients. Whether you're sipping a cocktail in the sun or grabbing a light lunch, LAb is an essential stop.

Kayak Beach Bar

See the city from a unique perspective—on the water. Kayak rentals are available here, and if you have a MultiSport card, your first hour is free. Afterwards, grab a riverside drink at the bar and unwind with the sounds of the city around you.

Loď Tajemství (Mystery Boat)

This theater boat, founded by the Forman Brothers, offers an eclectic mix of performances and events from May to September. Even if you’re not attending a show, it’s worth stopping by for a beer on deck while soaking in the riverside atmosphere.

Náplavka Farmers Market

One of the first and still among the best farmers markets in the city, this Saturday tradition runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Discover fresh local produce, artisanal breads, cheeses, preserves, and more—all with a scenic river view.

Events, design markets and more

From wine festivals to the MINT Market and pop-up design events, Náplavka is a hub of cultural happenings throughout spring and summer. Keep an eye on local event calendars to stay in the loop.

Insider tip: Walk or cycle further south past Podolská vodárna for a quieter, greener path. The trail to Braník, Modřany, and even Zbraslav offers peaceful views and plenty of spots to stop with a book or coffee.

The left bank (Smíchovská náplavka)

Cross Železniční most to discover a more relaxed riverside world. The west bank, stretching through Smíchov and under the shadow of Vyšehrad, offers a quieter, more creative counterpoint to the east bank's energy.

9iTKA

This cozy riverside café is perfect for a relaxed coffee break or afternoon hangout. With both indoor and outdoor seating and rotating art exhibits on the walls, it’s easy to linger longer than planned.

The Pitchers’ Sauna

Float in a warm, wood-fired sauna while gazing out at the Vyšehrad cliffs. Popular in winter, this floating sauna remains a favorite among locals well into summer. Combine your session with a stop at one of the nearby riverside cafés.

ŠLIKR Studio

Part café, part open ceramic studio, ŠLIKR invites you to sculpt, glaze, and relax by the river. From 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., guests can work independently with support on hand. Add a glass of Czech wine or a specialty coffee, and you’ve got the perfect creative retreat.

Dilna

A café with a purpose, Dilna encourages creativity through its in-house sewing workshop. Use the available sewing machines to alter or upcycle your clothes while sipping coffee, wine, or lemonade. It’s a blend of sustainability and community, right on the riverbank.

DOK16

Operated by the Prague Municipal Library, DOK16 isn’t a typical library. It runs on a reader-to-reader exchange model and offers workshops, lectures, and open studio hours for creatives.

MAKE A LOOP OR CHOOSE YOUR SIDE

One of the joys of Prague’s riverfront is its walkability. Start your journey at Palackého náměstí and use bridges like Železniční most or Jiráskův most to create a loop that lets you enjoy the best of both worlds.

But if you're wanting to pick a side, our easy formula is this: looking for buzz, culture, and energy? Stick to the right bank. In the mood for creative spaces, hidden cafés, and a slower pace? Explore the left bank, also the site of numerous food festivals throughout the year.

It visually plots every location featured here—from the buzzy bars and stalls of LAb and Kayak Beach Bar on the right bank to the tranquil creative hubs and hidden cafés like 9iTKA and DOK16 across the river.
