Police responding to a report of a trapped deer in Rokycany on Wednesday found an animal apparently less interested in being rescued than in clearing its own escape route.
The fallow deer charged toward the municipal officers, forcing them to jump aside. It then escaped into nearby woodland—only to reappear about 90 minutes later for a second outing through the town’s streets.
The encounter on the Oct. 28 national holiday ended with a police vehicle escorting the animal toward the river with its lights flashing and siren sounding. Nobody was injured, and no property damage was reported.
A rescue call takes an unexpected turn
The first call came through emergency number 112, reporting a roe deer trapped in a garden on Nad Kalvárií Street.
Officers arrived and established that the visitor was actually a fallow deer. They approached the fence to document the situation and work out how to help it. But the animal did not wait for a rescue plan.
“It ran straight toward the patrol. Officers had to react quickly and jump aside so the animal wouldn’t hit them,” municipal police commander Petr Wohlmuth told Novinky.cz.
The deer found its way out and disappeared into woodland on Kalvárie Hill. For a while, the incident appeared to be over. Then the calls started again.
Around an hour and a half later, municipal police received six reports of a deer roaming through Rokycany. Residents spotted it on Na Pátku and Soukenická streets, and officers identified it as the same animal they had encountered earlier.
Flashing lights for the journey home
This time, officers used their vehicle to guide the deer out of the streets. They steered it onto Dvořákova Street and accompanied it through traffic toward the Klabava River, using warning lights and a siren.
At the river, the animal turned along the bank and headed back toward the woodland on Kalvárie Hill, eventually returning to the countryside.
Wohlmuth said that this particular deer had not previously been seen in town. He suggested the rutting season could help explain its behavior.
Municipal police paired their lighthearted account with a practical reminder: anyone encountering a wild animal in town should keep their distance rather than try to catch, chase or approach it.
Even an apparently calm animal can react unpredictably when frightened or stressed, particularly a larger animal such as a fallow deer. Police advised calling municipal or national officers instead.
As for Wednesday’s visitor, the department offered its own explanation: the deer had taken a sightseeing tour of Rokycany, without a guide.
