President Petr Pavel accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s cabinet at Prague Castle and asked it to temporarily continue managing ministries until a new government is appointed. Andrej Babiš, whose ANO movement won the election, is leading coalition talks with SPD and the Motorists.

Petr Fiala sharply criticized the election of SPD leader Tomio Okamura as lower house speaker, calling him a racist and extremist unfit for the post. Okamura has faced repeated criticism for anti-migrant rhetoric and past legal disputes over campaign messaging. The businessman, who is Japanese-born, wants to sharply clamp down on Ukrainian refugees.

The Czech National Bank will release a CZK 5,000 banknote next year marking 100 years since the founding of the National Bank of Czechoslovakia. It will be the first Czech note to feature a holographic overprint and a QR code linking to the CNB’s anniversary pages.

banking Central bank keeps interest rate at 3.5 percent

The Czech National Bank (CNB) left its key interest rate at 3.5 percent, in line with market expectations. All board members supported the move, citing inflation risks. The CNB also kept other rates unchanged and revised this year’s economic growth forecast down to 2.3 percent.

crime Fake priest scams senior out of CZK 400,000

Police are investigating a case where a scammer pretending to be a priest defrauded a 73-year-old woman of CZK 400,000 via WhatsApp. Over months, he gained her trust and convinced her to send money for a fake cash parcel. The victim had previously been targeted by another scammer.
