Czechia and Slovakia will jointly oppose the EU’s planned ETS 2 emissions trading system and the migration pact, Chamber of Deputies Speaker Tomio Okamura said today after talks with his Slovak and Austrian counterparts. ETS 2, now delayed until 2028, would extend emissions trading to transport and building heat. Okamura also rejected claims Czechia would accept Muslim migrants. Okamura also rejected the idea of Ukraine joining the EU.
crime Prague police seek Nazi-salute men by Jewish shop
Prague police are searching for three men who performed a Nazi-style salute outside a Jewish souvenir shop in Vinohrady on Oct. 11. The men, photographed and captured on security footage, face up to three years in prison. Police spokesman Richard Hrdina urged anyone who recognizes them to contact the authorities. The group of eight passed the Belgická Street store around 3 a.m., filming the gesture on their phones.
environment Government tightens rules on reducing emissions
The government has approved an amendment tightening sustainability criteria for biofuels and updating rules on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from fuels, the Environment Ministry announced. The measure prioritizes advanced biofuels made from waste and renewable non-biological fuels produced using green electricity. Environment Minister Petr Hladík said the change, effective early next year, will support investment, diversify the energy mix, and strengthen Europe’s strategic security.
history Czechia grants 1920 constitution heritage status
The government has approved national cultural heritage status for the 1920 Constitution of the Czechoslovak Republic and the documents created during its drafting, Culture Minister Martin Baxa said after today’s cabinet meeting. The collection includes the law introducing the constitution, parliamentary prints, and proposed amendments, all of which illustrate the formation of Czechoslovakia’s early constitutional system.
