Babiš praises Orban in video message

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis praised Hungarian leader Viktor Orban in a video message to a Patriots for Europe gathering in Budapest, calling him a proven leader in uncertain times. Babis highlighted opposition to illegal migration and support for national values. He canceled plans to attend after a suspected arson attack in the Czech Republic. Hungary faces elections next month.

Allegations over Hungary, Slovakia, Russia ties

Hungary helped arrange a 2020 meeting between then Slovak prime minister Peter Pellegrini and Russian premier Mikhail Mishustin, a journalist alleged, citing a transcript of talks involving Hungary’s Peter Szijjarto and Russia’s Sergei Lavrov. Slovakia’s opposition called it a scandal and urged an investigation into possible Russian influence. Pellegrini declined comment. The claims surface ahead of Hungary’s elections and amid EU scrutiny.

Air travel costs rising due to Middle East war

Air travel is becoming more expensive as airlines raise fares and fuel surcharges due to the Middle East conflict. Jet fuel prices have surged, pushing carriers including Smartwings and EasyJet to warn of further increases. Travel agencies say package holidays may also rise in price. Demand for European destinations is growing, while previously booked trips are expected to remain unaffected.

‘Energy dating’ connects power users in Czechia

Electricity-sharing platforms dubbed “energy dating sites” are linking Czech households with surplus solar power to those seeking cheaper energy. More than 4,000 users have been paired, with over 40,000 participating overall, according to operators and data from the Electric Power Data Center. Companies including E.ON say shared electricity has exceeded 64 gigawatt hours as interest grows alongside home solar adoption.

Sulc named Czech Footballer of the Year

Midfielder Pavel Sulc was named Czech Footballer of the Year after a standout season with Lyon, finishing ahead of Patrik Schick and Ladislav Krejci. Sulc scored 11 league goals and became a key player after his transfer. Coach Jindrich Trpisovsky won his fifth coach award. Klara Cahynova was named top female player.
