Babiš stresses peace over pay

Czech PM defends Ukraine stance

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš explained Saturday via a social media post why the Czech Republic did not guarantee a new EU loan for Ukraine, saying the country already supports Kyiv through annual contributions of CZK 60–62 billion to the European budget. The EU agreed on a joint loan to finance Ukraine, but the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia opted out. Babiš emphasized that peace negotiations and Ukraine's security remain the top priorities.

Theft disrupts dozens of trains

Prague cable theft disrupts rail service

A theft of approximately 70 meters of signaling cables disrupted dozens of trains in central Prague on Saturday, causing delays of up to three hours, according to rail officials. Restrictions began at 5:20 a.m. after one track remained operational between Prague-Vršovice and the main station. Full service resumed after 2:40 p.m. The suspect was detained by rail staff and handed to police.

Candles, concerts, and silence honor anniversary

Czechia honors victims of Faculty of Arts shooting

Czechs on Sunday commemorated the victims of the deadly shooting at Charles University’s Faculty of Arts two years ago, in which 14 students and teachers were killed. Politicians, including Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Senate Speaker Miloš Vystrčil, laid wreaths and lit candles. Memorial services, a benefit concert, and a silent gathering emphasized stronger security measures, increased attention to mental health, and support for survivors and the bereaved.

Hotels, restaurants in Prague fill up

Prague bursting with shoppers, visitors

Prague is bustling with Christmas shoppers and tourists, with Prague City Tourism expecting around 750,000 visitors in December. Holiday markets, festive decorations, and seasonal treats draw locals and international travelers, primarily from Germany, the U.S., and the United Kingdom. Hotels report 85 percent occupancy, and Czechs plan to spend an average of CZK 12,500 on gifts. Free fish soup for 2,000 people will be served at Old Town Square on Christmas Eve.

Charitable boxes a success

Record 65,000 gifts donated in shoe box drive

People donated a record 65,393 gifts to children in need in this year’s Shoe Box Christmas collection, organizers said. The total exceeded the goal of 65,000 boxes, with toys, books, games, and non-perishable sweets included. Donations were supplemented by nearly 4.8 million crowns online. Funds will support disadvantaged children with school supplies, tutoring, healthy meals, and activities, though some regions with high demand still face shortages.
