While most people wait until after the new year to commit to a healthier lifestyle, those who want to spend a little time working off the excesses of the holidays sooner are in luck.

The Free Week of Sports (Týden sportu zdarma) is an annual Prague event that sees athletic clubs, pools, and sports hall open their doors to the public for free during the last week of the calendar year.

The week-long public work-out session is sponsored by Prague City Hall as a part of its Sporty Prague initiative.

From December 25-31, 2018 a number of venues in the Czech capital will be offering a variety of get-fit activities including swimming, skating, climbing, spinning, squash, softball, floorball, and tennis, free of charge.

According to the organizers, the biggest interest is typically in swimming pools and ice rinks, however, less traditional options include bouldering and playing indoor beach volleyball on heated sand.

Due to the fact that some sports areas have limited capacity, telephone or online booking is required; free access is also not always available during their Christmas opening hours, just on selected days and times.

Not all sports grounds are open free of charge so it’s suggested to do some planning in advance to avoid disappointment.
