What to do this weekend in Prague: Best events for September 25–28

From Thursday to Sunday, more than forty leading Prague art institutions will hold over 100 exhibitions, live performances and other accompanying events for the fifth edition of the Prague Art Week. Free admission for all during the entire festival, designed as an open platform to connect artists, galleries, museums and an art-savvy public.

Head to one of the oldest Czech vineyards, right next to the Prague Castle, and get your taste buds going out of a selection of over 50 wines from some of the highest-quality Bohemian and Moravian vineyards. Expect also live music and food stalls available on site to not succumb too fast to the devilish appeal of burčák.

Just a few tickets left for the State Opera’s groundbreaking adaptation premiere of Stephen Sondheim’s iconic Broadway music Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. A tale of injustice, revenge, and razor-sharp dark humor performed in Czech with English surtitles.

The LUSTR festival is back in Holešovická tržnice for its 13th edition, showcasing the work of over 100 talented illustrators and comic artists between September 24-30. Well-known artists will exhibit side-by-side with new talents and visitors will have the opportunity to browse through the most beautiful books and posters, meet directly with the creators and just generally enjoy the cream of the crop of the current illustration and graphic art scene.

A staple of Prague’s alternative and underground scene since 2010, the annual Lunchmeat festival of electronic music and new media art is coming to techno hotspot Ankali and the underground of the Trade Fair Palace, from Thursday to Sunday. Top DJs from the local scene, young talents and groundbreaking artists to dance throughout the weekend.

Summer cinema is almost out, but not yet. For one of this season’s last outdoor screenings, Kasárna Karlín is showing the unique Moonage Daydream documentary on Friday, a fascinating deep dive into the musical and creative journey of David Bowie. With dozens of remastered songs and never-before-seen footage, an absolute must-see for any Bowie fan. And don’t forget to dress warmly.

A paradise for many young children: Výstaviště is once again hosting its annual Heroes’ Day on Saturday, a day to learn more about the work of emergency, rescue and law enforcement services. From police helicopters to fire trucks or military equipment, young and old will have more than their fill to discover how it is behind the scenes. There will also be talks, interviews, live simulations and contests throughout the day.

Organized for the second year, the Poznej Vltavu festival makes the Prague riverbanks come alive for an entire day with dozens of activities, exhibitions, workshops and cruises to grasp the history, importance and unique character of the Vltava river. Most of the events are free, but some have a small admission fee, so check the festival’s website ahead to make sure.
