What to do this weekend in Prague: Best events for September 18–20

Starting this Saturday, the Bohemian Crown Jewels will be open to the public for free for a little more than a week, a display part of the Prague Castle’s Habsburg 500 exhibition commemorating the accession of Ferdinand I to the throne five centuries ago. A unique opportunity to marvel at the St. Wenceslas Crown, the Royal Scepter and more precious symbols of Czech history and national statehood.

Lovers of hot food and spicy, exotic cuisine, gather by the river embankment on Saturday for the annual Hot and Spicy Food Festival. Chili peppers, original hot sauces and unique spicy dishes await all those who aren’t afraid to push their heat resistance levels.

Prague’s beloved Kino Světozor is holding a special celebration evening on Saturday night to mark two decades of the most extraordinary onscreen performances that came out of New York’s Metropolitan Opera. One of Prague’s longest-running international music festivals is back in Prague this week with two concerts. On Friday, you can come listen to the musical duo made up of Czech jazz singer Martina Barta and American vibraphonist David Friedman at The Loop Jazz Club. Or come back the following night to the same venue for an electric Jazz Drink evening pairing jazzy vibes with delicious cocktails.

The counterpoint to more commercial movie fests, the Prague Independent Film Festival comes to Kino Lucerna over the weekend to showcase the work of young filmmakers and new talents to Prague audiences. After the first few events last weekend, Prague’s annual Zažít město jinak community festival gets in full swing on Saturday with entire streets and districts coming alive with live music, food and drink tents, workshops, children's activities and more.
