VIDEO: Romantic footage of snowy Prague from the 1920s

Prague and the Czech Republic woke up to white over the weekend with snowfall of up to 20 cm blanketing some regions of the Czech lands.

Thousands of homes were without power and the weather conditions complicated traffic via roads, rail, and air — seven aircraft had to be diverted and numerous flights were delayed at Prague’s Václav Havel Airport.

Police and firefighters reported hundreds of interventions yesterday while the heavy snowfall disrupted trams, buses, and pedestrian foot traffic throughout the Czech capital with snow-plow trams dispatched across Prague.

While today such a heavy snowfall is widely considered a calamity, this archive footage from Czech Television captures a different mood.

“When Prague was white” (Když Praha byla bílá) is a newsreel compilation from the twenties and thirties of the last century showing Praguers sledding in the streets, skating on the Vltava, and generally having a blast among snow-covered monuments including a drifted-0ver Charles Bridge.

Snow bunnies who wish to recreate some of the close to 20 minutes of scenes shown here are in luck — meteorologists from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute are predicting additional snowfall Monday night.
