🎞️ The Throwback

One of the most striking works of postwar Czechoslovak cinema, Otakar Vávra’s Krakatit blends science fiction, film noir, and psychological drama into a feverish warning about unchecked scientific ambition. Adapted from Karel Čapek’s novel, the film follows a brilliant chemist haunted by the destructive potential of his invention, capturing anxieties about war that feel as urgent today as they did in 1948.

Krakatit is now receiving international reappraisal with a new Blu-ray release sourced from a 4K restoration by the Czech National Film Archive. But you don’t have to wait for the physical release: the new restoration is available to watch in full with English subtitles on the Filmová klasika YouTube channel.
