Storms sweep into Czechia as temperatures set to plungeA sharp change in weather is heading across Czechia Wednesday evening, with thunderstorms, heavy downpours and strong winds expected before temperatures drop by more than 5 degrees Celsius in many areas overnight.
A cold front moving into the country from the northwest will first affect Bohemia before spreading east into Moravia and Silesia during the evening and overnight.
Wednesday's highs of 22 to 27 degrees Celsius will give way to temperatures of around 17 to 22 degrees Thursday, bringing a sudden end to the latest spell of late-summer warmth.
Storms and heavy rain move east
Rain and showers will become increasingly widespread as the front crosses Czechia, with thunderstorms developing locally. Some could become stronger, bringing intense rainfall and powerful wind gusts.
Most areas are expected to receive up to 10 millimeters of rain by Thursday morning, but localized totals during stronger showers and thunderstorms could reach around 30 millimeters.
Moravia and Silesia are expected to see the most widespread rainfall overnight, as thunderstorms and showers gradually turn into more persistent rain.
Drivers should be prepared for reduced visibility and water collecting on roads during heavier downpours, while strong wind gusts may accompany thunderstorms.
The combination of atmospheric instability ahead of the front and strong wind shear could also produce isolated severe thunderstorms, with forecasters saying a supercell cannot be entirely ruled out.
Thursday will feel noticeably cooler across the country. Rain will linger initially in eastern Czechia before gradually easing from the northwest, with some breaks in the cloud developing later in the day.
Friday morning will bring another reminder of the change, with overnight lows falling to between 6 and 11 degrees Celsius. Conditions should otherwise become calmer, with partly cloudy to overcast skies and only isolated showers.
