Prague has been named the seventh-best city in the world for exploring on foot in 2026, according to a global ranking by travel platform Freetour.com. The result is based on millions of searches, bookings, and reviews from travelers using free walking tours across more than 1,100 cities worldwide.
The ranking highlights Prague’s continued appeal as a compact and walkable European capital, where major landmarks, historic streets, and everyday city life are closely connected within the city center.
European cities dominate global ranking
The 2026 list is led by Budapest, followed by Rome and Vienna, with Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, and Prague forming the upper tier of the ranking. Naples, Florence, and Lisbon complete the global top 10, underscoring the strong dominance of European destinations in walking-focused tourism.
The platform said the ranking reflects real user behavior, drawing on large-scale data from tour bookings and traveler reviews rather than editorial selection. Other major European cities, including London, Amsterdam, Athens, and Berlin, also appear within the top 30.
Prague’s high ranking is largely attributed to its dense historic center, where key landmarks sit within a relatively small, pedestrian-friendly area. Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, and surrounding districts remain the most frequently explored parts of the city, particularly for short-stay visitors.
Beyond the main attractions, the city’s narrower streets, courtyards, and neighbourhood cafés contribute to its reputation as a place best experienced on foot. For many visitors, walking through Prague is less about a fixed itinerary and more about gradual discovery across different layers of its architecture and history.
The platform described Prague as a “fairytale city full of layers,” noting that its atmosphere shifts significantly from one street to the next while remaining easy to navigate without transport.

Broader shift toward experience-led travel
The findings reflect a wider shift in tourism toward slower, experience-based travel, where visitors prioritize local context and accessibility over tightly scheduled sightseeing. Free walking tours, often operating on a pay-what-you-wish model, have become increasingly popular as a low-cost way to explore cities.
Freetour.com, which operates in more than 1,100 cities globally, said its data shows growing demand for guided walking experiences that combine orientation, storytelling, and local insight.
