A gun attack at the town hall in Chribská, a small municipality in north Bohemia, left one man dead and six people injured on Monday, according to Czech police. The attacker was shot and killed by police at the scene, with officers confirming there is no further danger to the public.

The shooting took place during the day inside the town hall building in Chribská, a town of around 1,300 residents near the German border. Police said the situation was secured shortly after officers arrived, and the building was evacuated.

Among those with gunshot wounds were three civilians, including at least one woman in serious condition, and three police officers. The mayor of Chribská was among the injured. Terrorism was ruled out as a motive for the shooting, with regional police citing relationship problems as the likely cause.

The shooter possessed weapons illegally and had two pistols and a rifle with him at the time of the attack. Police say the man shot himself.

Two patients were taken to Masaryk Hospital in Ústí nad Labem with chest injuries, while four others were transported to a hospital in Děčín, hospital officials said.

Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar travelled to Chribská shortly after the attack. Writing on social media, he said the shooter had been neutralized and confirmed there was no ongoing threat.

According to media reports from Chribská, locals are speculating that the shooter was a drug addict and the son of one of the employees.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš expressed condolences to the victim’s family and others affected. Speaking after a cabinet meeting, he described the shooting as a tragic event that had shocked the country. He said the government would wait for confirmed information before commenting further, promising transparency as more details become available.

President Pavel also expressed condolences to families affected by today’s shooting, calling it the desperate act of an individual and saying that it is difficult to prevent such incidents.

Regional governor Richard Brabec also arrived in Chribská, alongside police psychologists who were deployed to provide support to victims, witnesses, and local residents. Emergency services remained at the scene for several hours, and police cordoned off the area around the town hall while redirecting traffic.

Residents were urged to avoid the immediate vicinity to allow emergency and investigative teams to work. Sirens were heard across the town as police, firefighters, and paramedics responded.

Chribská is a town with about 1,300 inhabitants in the Děčín District, in the Lusatian Mountains, on the edge of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park.

At the request of the police, six firefighting units, three professional and three volunteer, were on standby. Police are asking citizens to avoid the incident scene to allow emergency services to pass through.
