Most Beautiful Czech Tree Lane Competition Begins

There is certainly something romantic, and particularly European, about driving along those tree-lined avenues connecting Prague with the countryside. If you find these leafy green passages just as charming as I do, take note: an actual competition exists that lets nature lovers nominate the “most beautiful tree alley.”

The sixth annual Alej roku (Alley of the year) is organized by environmental non-profit Arnika. Candidates are nominated and voted for by visitors to the Alej roku website who send in photos and stories about their favorite tree-lined lane. Last year a chestnut alley in Jedovnice near Brno was awarded top honors.

“Rows of trees in our country contribute to increasing the hospitable atmosphere and a sense of home. They are connecting the open landscape and settlements, and it fulfills irreplaceable functions,” said Marcela Klemensová of Arnika.

Last year the winning chestnut alley received 1,400 out of 8,000 votes cast. In second place was a birch alley in Melkovic na Blanensku and in third an avenue of ash trees in Friedland in the Liberec region.

Voting takes place until October 10; winners will be announced on October 23.
