Heavy snowfall and freezing temps are heading to the Czech Republic this weekend

Those traveling in mountainous regions of the Czech Republic are advised to take precautions on the roads

It may not have been a white Christmas in Prague but those headed to mountain destinations for ski holidays may get a dose of winter white this weekend.

According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI), a cold front is approaching from the north and northeast, and could be bringing with it strong winds and heavy snow.

Snowfall is expected to blanket mountain regions beginning Friday afternoon and continuing through Saturday. Accumulation could lead to drifting and poor driving conditions in a number of regions, CHMI warns.

A snowstorm warning has been issued for regions 700 meters above sea level including Liberec, Hradec Králové Region, Pardubice, Olomouc, Zlín, and Moravian-Silesia from Friday 3 pm to Sunday midnight.

Temperatures are also expected to drop, falling below zero on Saturday with night temperatures ranging from 0 to -4°C, during the day they will rise to a maximum of 2°C degrees Celsius, though the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) expects temperatures to stay at around -2°C. On Sunday, the highest daily temperatures will range from -1°C to 3°C.

Icy conditions may also begin to form and travelers in the areas listed are urged to take precautions on the roads this weekend. Temperatures should begin to warm on Monday leading to dense clouds and occasional fog. The cold front is in effect across Eastern Europe.
