Czechia to speed up foreigner's resident permits with new digital system

While the new system will let applicants complete much of the process online, in-person steps like biometrics will still be required.

Foreigners applying to live in the Czech Republic could see faster processing times under a new digital system proposed by the Interior Ministry. The system would link residence applications directly to state databases, allowing authorities to register arrivals consistently and more quickly revoke permits in certain cases.

The ministry said the changes are part of a draft amendment to the law on foreigners, currently submitted to the electronic library of the legislative process. If passed, it would also introduce new rules for institutions that invite foreigners, including employers, universities, and sports clubs, making them more responsible for the people they host.

“The proven system of government-set quotas from 2019, used mainly for labor migration, will now apply to other types of stays,” the ministry said. “This will allow the state to have full control over which countries foreigners may enter the Czech Republic from.”

What changes?

Currently, foreigners can submit applications or check their status online through the Foreigners’ Information System, although some steps, such as biometrics, still require in-person visits.

The new law, if passed, would go further by linking applications to state databases, making EU citizen registration mandatory, and consolidating a fragmented legal system.

Authorities would also be able to revoke residence more quickly for criminals or those who threaten public order. EU citizens would also be required to register under the new rules.

Interior Minister Lubomir Metnar (ANO) stated that the digital system would enhance registration and enable authorities to concentrate on more complex cases.

“Thanks to digitization, the new law on foreigners will speed up processes, contribute to better registration of foreigners, and enable the relevant authorities to focus on problematic cases. Digitization will thus lead to enhanced security,” he said in a press release.

The ministry hopes that digitization will provide a clearer overview of why and how many foreigners come to the Czech Republic, potentially reducing delays in permit approvals and increasing administrative efficiency. The proposal does not yet have a timeline for parliamentary debate or implementation.

Implementation in 2029

If the bill passes, foreign applicants and organizations that invite them can expect faster processing and clearer responsibilities. Officials say the changes are part of a broader effort to modernize migration management while ensuring public safety.

The government is expected to discuss the proposal in the coming months, with a planned effective date of Jan. 1, 2029. Officials say the extended timeline will allow authorities and institutions to prepare for the new digital processes and ensure smooth implementation.
